The slick and clean surfaces of your car promote better airflow, such that more of the car's surface is under laminar flow. There's less surface area to piss off the air into one huge turbulent boundary layer, therefore reducing drag.
I studied fluid dynamics in school and I just made that up.

I'll be honest I like the crazy looks you get in the winter when you go to the coin operated wash bays and it's a line of cars each waiting there turn and. You pull in and break out the buckets IK foamer and merlox sprayer and they are sitting there debating there life choice on choosing the wrong line. And I'm like hey I'm just here for the water
