how to avoid N55 valvetronic motor fault

Just had a friend with an E90 N55 have their valvetronic motor go out and as a result has to replace their eccentric shaft too..
Quote to fix seems insane and I personally have an F30 N55. Wanted to know what preventative maintenance I should be doing to ensure this doesn’t happen to me? I already regularly change my oil every 3-5k miles. Please let me know what major things can cause this to happen so I don’t ever run into this issue myself. Thanks all

Recently just had to have my valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft replaced on my f30. It sucked. According to research I tried to do on my own and talking to the mechanics who performed the work for me, there was nothing I could have changed on my own that would have prevented it from happening. It's just an unfortunate issue that can come up owning these cars. I haven't had a single issue come up until this happened in my entirety of ownership.

Thankfully my buddy is a BMW specialist and performed the work (traded labor for labor. I own a detail shop and performed work for some of his customer cars) so I saved quite a bit. Quote was roughly 6500$ at 2 other shops to perform the work including parts. One shop even suggested I needed to replace my DME which was not true.

I only had to pay for parts which was roughly 2100$ all said and done.
