Buying advice - F31 LCI
Hi there, looking at a used F31 M Sport 2015 (LCI). Good spec but has 137K miles on the clock. Will be first time BMW owner so would appreciate advice as to whether I should avoid one with this high mileage? It looks very well cared for and has full BMW service history. Motorway miles (apparently). Should I have a full inspection before buying? Thanks

First of all which motor? Some of the 4 cylinders are known to have timing chain/guide issues so with that mileage, if its a 4 cylinder, I would want to know if that has been remedied already.
Also, with that mileage, I would want to have a pre-purchase inspection completed by a 3rd party. Worth the cost. It could save you hundreds if not thousands in repairs.

Its a 320d LCI, so believe this is the b47 motor with 188bhp (B47D20 140 kW version)? Obviously a risk with high mileage but worth it if the inspection is clear?
Thank you! |

Hi there,
I have 320d LCI from that year with around 120.000km bought second hand with 74.000km on the clock at the time. Withing the last 3+ years that I have been using it the only issue was the EGR cooler which went at the very start but this was repaired by the good people of BMW Kassel in Germany. It is a recall issue so check that if it has been replaced. As you mentioned B47 engine should be less prone to any chain issues and in my case engine is faultless so far! Everything else has been regular maintenance or my urge to do some upgrades or tinker. Let me known if you want to know anything else. |

Thank you.
The seller tells me the manifold and EGR was replaced under warranty by BMW in 2019. One question - what is the standard sound system like? I was ideally looking for Harmon/Kardon, but do you know the quality of the standard system? What kind of MPG are you getting in real world? Thank yoU! Much appreciate your help! |

To be honest it was underwhelming, mind you I had the very basic HIFI so just a small
speaker per door and woofer under front seats, no A pillar tweeters etc. So my call to action was to get a Focal BMW set (which is more or less plug and play albeit an adapter) Focal IFBMW-S (French site http://www.adnauto.fr/ had them at a very good price) which turned things around for me even without getting an amp upgrade. Maybe your model has the HIFI set, this is a step above mine and a step below HK but I didn't have the chance to hear it so can't comment. Real world consumption would be cca 7-7.5l in the city with the AC on (40ish MPG) and 5-6l (50+MPG) on the highway if within the legal cruising speeds. This is mostly in comfort mode with average quality fuel and normal to spirited driving, nothing crazy. Oh and yes mine is the 8 speed ZF auto box. Most welcome, if you need anything else let me know. |
