335d vs 330d: are the engines physically different?
Is a 335d a re-mapped 330d, or is there is more to it than that? Anyone know for sure? Sorry if this is well known.

Yes, they are definitely different. The 335d has 2 turbos to the 330d's 1 turbo. I believe it has a smaller one for quick response low down and then a larger one for higher revs.

I would have given BMW an order for a 335d if it wasn't for x drive.
So I'm waiting for a slightly lower powered 330d. The 335d engine has twin turbos I'm told. Not sure if I could buy a twin turbo unit and bolt it on at some stage. Probably not... |

Thanks. I found the references to "twin power" on the BMW site unclear, as they use it in relation to the 330d (meaning the type of turbo?), but I could not find anything specific about the 335d.

Exactly why I ordered a 330d, as didn't want xDrive....

Same as me, coming from an E92 335D, didn't want xDrive. The 4/330D is a very sweet all rounder.

I wonder if xdrive has gained BMW more sales than it has lost it?...

Polar opposite here, getting the 335d was an easy choice as I explicitly wanted xDrive and it made no sense to get a 330d xDrive...
It would be interesting to know if there is any difference to the engine internals, probably not I suspect - may have bigger injectors although PDK would suggest they have similar capabilities in terms of fuelling. The sequential turbo charging is quite a complex set-up and requires complexity in the exhaust and intake, as well as ECU to control a smooth cross-over. In terms of drive - the 335d gives more torque across a larger rev range, and higher peak power - it has more of a 'big engine' feel as a result and is quicker all-round. I know a number of ex Audi S/RS owners like myself that have jumped to BMW as a result of xDrive; those who don't want it still have the 335i / 330d PPK / M-power options available, it was about time it came to the UK. |

"Twin power" is (deliberately?) confusing but usually means a single twin-scroll turbocharger i.e. a turbo that has two volutes through the turbine (exhaust) housing for a wider spread of torque than a single volute turbo. Due to the different length paths this can produce a slightly offbeat exhaust note.

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N57
Seems there is more pressure too for the 335d.... 57D30Ox has 1800 bar pressure, while N57D30Tx has 2000 bar pressure. N57D30Ox uses single turbocharger, while N57D30Tx uses 2 turbochargers, and N57S uses 3 turbochargers of varying size.

It's bound to of gained them sales, certainly poaching some Audi customers. The thing that annoys me with the BMW and xDrive is the fitment of the SE suspension. Surely with all the options available when speccing the car, that's a choice an owner should have.

With hindsight I would have still went xdrive but would have had ACS from new (prior to delivery/ collection). I believe the big resale point with the 335d over the 330 will be the EU6 engine rather than just the power output. |

Then using the £3k difference put the car through ACS and had say £3k to £4k (depending on discounts) of kit, springs etc fitted). |

Thats what I thought. I'm sure Nisfan mentioned in the past that the rear M Sport brakes where the same as standard but front M Sport brakes are upgraded. More pistons or something.

I think it's the other way round, rears are upgraded to two piston. Brake discs are bigger too, 370mm fronts instead of 340 I think.
