Good choice of car, you'll be back on here though as the 5 series forum is quiet to say the least!

The 520D is cracking car, you'll enjoy it.

A good friend got a full spec 520D touring, had a good drive of it and it surprised me how refined it was compared to 320Ds I have driven.

Yes, there's little action on any other UK areas of bimmerpost. 520D is a great car, loved mine on the motorways for the couple of years I had it.

This

520D is a BIG cut above an F30 in terms of refinement

Congrats on the new car, as others say the 5 is a big step up from the 3.

Come back and post here too.

It's funny how most of you are speaking high of the 5, yet non of you has made it their choice of ride! Most of your replies would be, 'its too big' So size DOES matter then? and its Not about how you 'Drive it/Use it'

Unless it's just motorway cruising

Well he's just got a shiny new 520D so we're not going to pan it...but I have 2 5 series, the last being quite recent F10 and its amazingly well put together and quite a car....BUT each time Ive moved on from the 5 I've thought its just too big. Main reason for going F82 rather than an M5, just a bit too big for me. Great to have the choices at BMW though, just wish fit and finish would be the same in the ranges.

I've recently changed from an F31 320D to a F10 520D SE / B47 and it is extremely quiet and refined. So much so you can hear the turbo.

Yes its a big car, but it's no trouble at all around the narrow lanes in Northumberland or in Newcastle traffic. Some car parks are a bit of a faff though.

Would I go back to a 3 series? I doubt it.

My F10 has been everything that has already been mentioned (quiet, comfortable etc)

For me the size just got tiresome. You can't throw it around like a F30 but then I guess it's not that type of car.

What colour combo you gone for?

Great stuff, it's such a great wrap around cabin focused on the driver, plus a traditional old school screen in dash set up too.

Shame on you driving and enjoying your car before posting any pics tot he Bimmerpost faithful

You tend to adjust your driving style to it, it's a great car. You're gonna love it.
I missed the Lci, my seats are freezing (pre heated!) in this weather.

May feel wide, but in reality it is only 49mm (less than 2" across the body) and 71mm across the mirrors. You'll get used to it, parking is the tight part, as all cars are getting wider and parking spaces are still the same.

Enjoy the car, I note another Sophisto grey.

Can you throw them around if you've hit the dynamic drive set up? If the next one is no bigger and is talked about being significantly lighter, then could be tempting for my next car.

I was thinking exactly the same as I read down this thread. The 5 series is a big luxo barge. It's great if you need a load lugger or a motorway cruiser. I'd consider one if they bring the 550d to the UK. But there is still the issue of size on our b roads.

The way Adaptive Drive allows you to corner, is so deceptive. I find I'm often driving through the twisty stuff faster than I would in my E91, just doesn't feel as fast.

Even in Normal and Comfort modes cornering is flat, sort of contradiction to have a softer riding but flat and well controlled body. Dial in Sport or Sport+ and besides the VDC changes, it switches to the Sport Active Roll Stabilisation program and it hunkers down, stays virtually flat whatever you throw at the chassis, as no large car I've ever driven before. A finer nuance is the way it has a perfectly neutral handling balance at low to mid driving levels, but as you work the chassis harder it deliberately dials in a little understeer, all done with 'on the fly' tuning of the adjustable roll bars.

It was Adaptive Drive with the 'star' ARS, (Dynamic Drive as it was know) which shrinks the 5-series chassis, that convinced me a 5-series was the way to go, even if it was a bigger car than I first wanted. It is a completely different chassis IMO, than a standard passive setup.

Thanks Pete. Does an M5 use a variation of this system or a more traditional set up?

More traditional, specifically designed EDC (VDC), still with 3 dynamic settings. No active roll control, normal ARBs.
