N47 timing chain recall
Finally it is official.
A few days ago, a recall action was started for the N47 timing chain problem. Only some cars are selected for the recall so you will have to ask first your dealer if your car is included in this action or not. My car was built in dec 2007 and it will be repaired by BMW |

In Romania and in Moldavia. I guess it is available all over Europe.
It started as a rumour on a forum and several users (including me) contacted the dealers. The dealers confirm it. I don't have links to the official announcement. |

I'm at 96k km. It can be hear when you're close to a wall or something and when you're turning off the engine. I'll call the local BMW dealer and ask them.

Hi guys. Thanks very much for posting this information. I own an E61 so wouldn't normally look here, but I came across this thread whilst looking for something else.
I called my dealer and they had no information regarding this recall. I'm in the UK. They checked my vin and there were no outstanding recalls, so can only presume either I'm not covered by this or that BMW UK don't have any plans to honour it. If anyone has anymore info that would be great. |

They are not measuring the noise of the timing chains.
The only measurement that they are performing is to measure the length of the upper chain. Depending on the result, they are replacing: - the tensioner only (no elongation or minimal) - the tensioner and the upper chain (elongation is between some limits) - the tensioner, the upper chain and the lower chain + guides if the elongation is above a limit In my case, the lower chain is still making noise so the recall did not solved the problem entirely. |

Yes I understand that. But normally you wouldn't suspect a problem unless the chain was noisy. Was yours noisy which caused you to go to the dealers and request a repair? Or was your car OK as far as you were concerned until the dealer got in touch to suggest you might need some work done?

When was your e61 built? In Germany only the 07 / 08 models are affected by this recall. And it isnīt an official recall here in Germany too. You must ask your dealer if the vin is affected or not. |

Hi all. I've just signed up after reading this post. I own an E61 so wouldn't normally look here. Thanks for the info. I phoned my dealer today to be told there are no outstanding recalls for my car. I asked specifically about this but they had no knowledge of it. I'm in Scotland. I might ask at a different dealers in a few weeks.
