Active Sound Design (ASD) Retrofit progress

Hi guys

I thought I'd post of this thread to share my progress on retrofitting Active Sound Design to my 2013 328i MSport.

To start off with I ordered the module. It has various part numbers, but apparently they are all the same: 65129352264*; 65129326555; 65129343317; 65129353021; 65129362445; 65129362445; 65 12 9 322 712 (03/12 -> ); 65 12 9 302 536 (03/12 -> 07/13).*

I could not get a part number for the connector so I will be making up my own.

Next up I got the pin assignments from ISTA Rheingold:

Here is the inside of the connector:

I then transposed all the pin assignments onto an image to make my life easier:

I then continued to only connect power and the CAN signal.

ISTA detects the new module
ISTA before:

ISTA after:

E-SYS detects the new module:

After this I flashed the ASD module. I used a modified FA where I changed the production code typekey to 3C17 to ensure it is a production code that included ASD.

Here is the FDL edit view afterward:

Next thing I must connect the feed from NBT head unit and output to the AMP. I first need to spend some time to make proper connectors so will update all you guys once I progress further.

Very excited to see this retrofit work!

Yeah either hear nothing from your engine, just the audio playing your favorite songs, or frequently leaving my window open to hearthe song of the piggybacked tuned N55 through my Dinan exhaust.
To those around you the N20 would sould the same, wouldn't it?
I like others don't understand the logic behind fooling yourself with an artificial sound.
I think performance is paramount to sound of the engine and others have complimented the spirited behavior of the four cylinder.
Perhaps the engine might sound better with an aftermarket tune?

if bmw and many other are investing in these device is because the downsizing is going to destroy 50 years of work about engine sound...

you're kidding right? don't make me do a before and after video The next 3-4 people who've gotten into my car after enabling it all asked if i've modified/upgraded my engine or exhaust, which I haven't. And I didn't say a thing to them before hand...

Its one thing to disagree on whether this feature is cool or not cool to enable. To each his own. But the fact that there is an objective tangible difference in sound is without dispute

Hi guys

Here are some videos of my retrofitted ASD in action.

First half of first video, comfort mode, barely noticeable (the way I want it). 2nd half of first video, sport mode, more noticeable.

Second video I messed around with F80 M4 settings. Way too aggressive and noticeable, especially on my aftermarket amp & speakers. What also sucks about the M4 setting is that the volume is constant on Eco-Pro,Comfort and Sport. Probably because M4 has different way of adjusting driving modes.

vitchie - Do you know if this would work on a HK system, want to try this out. Did you have to run any additional wires from the NBT head unit or is this all isolated to the AMP in the boot and coding?

It needs an exhaust, they both do, the 28i and 35i. They both just sound like nothing without it IMO.

The MPerformance exhaust line is, in my opinion, what should have been standard with MSport model, it's not too loud but really helps to bring out the beautiful sound of the engine.

yeah, you'd think M-sport stuff would come with the M-sport package (stuff like M-sport exhaust, M-sport suspension, M-sport brakes)....but no BMW wants to make you feel stupid for paying extra $$ for the "m-sport package" and then kick you while you're down, making you pay MORE for m-sport stuff. they got us good.

what they SHOULD have done was had their exhaust tuned by the same people that did the G37 coupe exhaust.....now thats a nice sounding exhaust

I must admit it is always annoying when you hear a G37 go by and say "well, atleast that exhaust makes SOME noise" vs the none that we have.

It is not as bad as getting an M car and then having to pay more money to get M-Performance parts! Really!!???

Shouldn't an M car come with M parts?
