Motor oil

I've hit about 3800 miles on my car about now and have had the dealer claim to change the motor oil at break in (1200). My car recently said that it needs service specifically the motor oil. The manual says 0w-30 or 5w-30. The parts advisor tried to convince me to buy 10w-60 even though I have an F80 M3. Which oil is better 0w-30 or 5w-30? [IMG][/IMG]

10W60 was the oil prescribed for the E9X M3. DO NOT USE THIS OIL IN THE F8X.

0W30 is the oil prescribed for the F8X. However, it seems it is not available in North America and dealers are told by BMW to use 5W30, the same oil as normal (non-M) models. I had a discussion about this with my service advisor and he showed me the part number that comes out of their system, it is indeed for the 5W30. I can only assume that the 0W30 is a better oil as it maintains its viscosity over a broader temperature spectrum.

Thanks, much appreciated. Think Castrol 0w-30 works fine? Have you changed your own motor oil so far?

No I have not. All oil changes are included in the the free maintenance program for the first 4 years/80k km here in Canada, so no need to do it myself.

Castrol 0W30 should be perfect as it is the oil that was originally planned for the S55 .

Sux no dipstick in this thing makes most people dependent on expensive time consuming steelerships for oil changes..

The electronic dipstick is a pain, but you should be able to read it yourself in iDrive. The one in my 128 without iDrive even told me to add a full quart today.

Get in the car, turn-on the ignition without turning on the engine, press and hold the odometer reset button for a few seconds. The "Service management Menu" will appear. Let go of the odometer reset button, and the press it again repeatedly to scroll through the different service interval items. Once you are on the one you want (oil change in your case), press and hold the odometer rest button again until you see "Reset?" appear. Release and re-press and hold the button until the reset is complete .

PS: I went by memory, so I hope I wrote it right .

Looks right for what I did in my 128. Didn't know it was the same with iDrive. Reminds me, I need to jot down my mileage for last oil change in my maintenance records.
