Only one exhaust steam?

My 2016 F36 is equipped with MPE and MPPK, I noticed when my car was sitting idling on cold day and only one steam coming out of one exhaust? MPE came with two exhaust system. Is one exhaust fake or close while another one is open?

The left pipe has a valve. During warm up, it's closed so you'll only see exhaust coming out of the right side.

I believe it's the same with all BMWs. First steam comes out of the right pipe and after a minute or so the one on the left opens up and smoke comes out of both. I know it's kinda strange looking at it but once the car is warmed up, both pipes emit equal amounts...

Thanks, I was reading other forum that I can make it open by unplugging connector on exhaust and it is 10 minutes job. I wonder if coding is also other way?

I don't believe the valve can be coded to always be open. If you drive around in sport mode, it will be open.

Is the valve disconnect different on the MPE than the stock exhaust? Because it certainly is no 10 minute job on the stock exhaust, maybe 10 seconds. Simply unplug connector and tuck away. It should be noted that this "Mod" (if you want to call it that) should only be done in the morning (before start-up) when the valve is open. You can shine a flashlight into the left exhaust to make sure it's open. I hated seeing steam come out of only one pipe in the morning (even in sport +) so much so that I did this mod solely for that purpose.

Can you post pics of where this "connector" is please. only having one exhaust open annoys the shit out of me.

Thanks for tip, I am not sure what is different between stock and MPE. I will give it a try when I have time.

Stock and MPE are the same. Three ways to open the valve all the time.
1. Golf tee mod. Remove spring and Wrap a wire around the flap valve. 2. Just disconnect the connector on the left at the flap valve. Just verify its in the open position when you disconnect it. 3. Jb4 tune will allow you to open or close it whenever you want via the BC button on the steering column.

The weekly "exhaust only out of passenger side" service announcement. 😄

+1, and there's reasons why it's that way. If there weren't BMW wouldn't do it, if only for the cost savings and reduction in complexity.

Hey, I was thinking about doing the same, as it bothers me a lot to see that smoke comes out only from the right pipe. But even before start up the valve is closed, so if I unplug it - it will remain always closed, is that right?
Did you notice any change after unplugging? No errors on the dash screen?
Thanks in advance

The valve should be open in the morning before start-up. If you unplug the the connector when the valve is closed, it will remain closed, so make sure it's open. There will be no errors on the dash. The only thing that I have noticed is a bit more sound if I put it it eco pro or Comfort, but I never drive in those modes anyway.

Thanks! I had a feeling that it's closed in the morning, but will try to check if that's so.

Is the valve supposed to be opened or closed at startup? I have seen it stated a couple different ways. I believe my valve is open and then closes once it warms up a bit. This makes sense to me, but it does not explain the steam only coming out of one side of the exhaust in the morning. Wouldn't it be the other way around?

The valve is closed on startup. The loud startup noise is because of the wastegate at the wide open position.

It's not "smoke", it's water vapor - but regardless, it's normal, and with the flap disconnected, you get an annoying drone at moderate throttle that will drive backseat passengers nuts. I did this to mine (also with MPE and MPPK) and re-plugged it after a couple of cruises down the highway.

You are right, the valve is always closed unless you put the car in Sport or Sport + and floor the pedal.

It seems that it is impossible to unplug actuator while flap is open. I tried many different method to make it open and no luck. If there is no choice and I will have to unclip and wire it.
