Another Dream Car from the 1980's: The E30 M3 based Hartge H36-24

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
The Hartge H36 (or H35-24): an E30 M3 with a transplanted M88 engine... Only 6 Produced! What a magnificent car!!

The H35-24’s were the top model in Hartge’s 1980’s E30 H35 line up and was released in October of 1985. Conversions began on the BMW E30 range in 1981 initially as a tuning house until in 1985 when Hartge were granted manufacturer status by the German Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA). From then on all Hartge cars received a Hartge motorsport VIN plate that was attached to the vehicle in place of the original BMW one.

The H35 (from 1981) and H35-24 (from 1985) could have different motor configurations depending on that year they were produced and the market they were intended for, all were based on the BMW M30 “big six” Block. Initially the H35 using the 3 46 EB @ 199 kw (M30B34) from the 5 series BMW where the H35-24 used the 3 56 ED @ 210 kw (M88/3) 24 valve motor modified from the BMW M1 for BMWs use in the M635csi. From 1986 Hartge’s attention moved to the new E30 M3 this led to the development of the last of the H35’s the H35-24s also initially with the M88/3.

Later H35 conversions used the next generation of BMW motors from the 5 and 6 series. From 1988 the H35 used the M30B35 and the H35-24 and 24s using the S38B35. Initial conversions where done on the BMW E30 323i until 1986 when the 325i was used as the donor into the early 1990’s, bar the “s” that used the M3.

The H35-24 time in the limelight was relatively short as the H35-24s M3 conversions soon over shadowed it, therefore are a rare vehicle, with only six originally produced by the factory in 1985 with the M88/3.

Production numbers are difficult to determine as conversions/builds were only done on request and also carried out by authorised Hartge agents outside of Germany. Source: Hartge Brochures and Technical documentation (KBA & TUV submission 12/84)

Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely have to read them over lunch.

I really would love another BMW from the 80s. They had such an aura about them!

Definitely had aura and mystique. That has since been lost in place of profits, I get it though.

When I was 6 (back in the day: 1988), my aunt bought me a 1:8 scale radio control E30 M3 touring car for my birthday. I still remember opening it and seeing the blue-purple-red stripes on it. It looked like a brick next to the coveted F40's and Countache of the time but there was something real special about this car. Even in it's 1:8 scale, something about it just screamed RACE.

I loved it then and I still love it now. I've just put it behind me as pursuing one and then getting it in tip-top shape is unrealistic for me. Kudos to the guys out there that still have them in excellent condition.

BTW I have a friend with a MINT-like new grey original E30 M3 with an S52 engine swap. I know people really want the S14 but finding replacement parts is damn near impossible. He's selling it and would like 35K. This is as good as they come and from an aesthetic vantage point, you won't find better. If anyone is interested in pics, please let me know.

As far as motors, an E30 M3 is a great drive regardless of motor. I've driven S50,S52, and S65 swap cars, stock and 2.5l with all sorts of cam setups and they all are great.

I absolutely I prefer a 2.5L S14 as my favorite; however. Add a carbon airbox and the sound is just amazing and far better than the S54 in my opinion.

I actually had the parts for an S54 swap with 6 speed and alpha N ready to go into a track rat but then sold it all and got my 1M.

Love my 1M but I sure wish I also had an E30 M3.

I often wonder how a vehicle of this nature would sell today if relaunched by BMW. It would be interesting to understand the marketing dynamics of the latter if BMW were to undertake a marketing research project to establish the viability of an updated E30 in todays marketplace. When VW relaunched the Beetle, as I understand, there was no intention to do so, but displaying the vehicle as a concept at one of the big motor shows caused a ruckus when a large number of consumers said that they would place orders right then and there, resulting in VW bringing the concept to market. As an E92 M3 owner, I would certainly step up and place an order for an updated E30. I have fond memories of the BMW's from the E30 generation. I was a struggling Insurance salesman, and many of my successful co-workers owned an E30. At the time, I was blown away by the interior, fit and finish was incredible, the gear shifts were crisp and smooth, and the 6 cylinder motor in the 325i had plenty power. just thinking........

As stated above, imagine if BMW actually makes another exact one like this with the same engine and everything?

That would be so great.

Is there (here) a e30 Forum? I just bought a e30 235i Cabrio, which I'm going to build up.
Because I finished modding the F80, so I needed a new Project.
