F36: Water unlocks doors - Comfort Access

I noticed a strange issue this morning when rinsing my car which has never happened in the past 4 months of owning the car.

I was rinsing my car this morning with relatively low pressure from a hose and when i got to the front door handles, the doors unlocked. So i went over the door handles again with the hose and they locked. It kept unlocking and locking the doors - both driver and passenger front doors.

Has anyone experienced such an issue? What can I do to stop this from happening as it never happened before. I usually wash my car every 2-3 weeks and this is the first time its happened. Any ideas?

Yes, happened to me many times. Easy solution is don't have the key fob on you when washing the car. Just set it somewhere else and the Comfort Access won't cause any issues.

Happens to me all the time. Even more annoying is I have BT speakers in my garage for when I'm washing the cars. When it unlocks the phone then reconnects to the car and plays music inside the car instead of my garage speakers.

This is strange because it never happened before and it just started today.

You think that's bad? My F31's power tailgate opens up by itself if I so much as spray water at it the wrong way *insert inappropriate sexual joke here*.

Where is your fob when this happens? If it's in your pocket, then this is pretty much normal. The sensor on the door handle I believe is a pressure sensor so as long as the fob on you, then water getting on it from a hose will do that. Again, once I put the fob elsewhere, there were no more issues.

As others have said, normal - put the key fob elsewhere.

Wash my car 2 times a week...doors are always locking and unlocking..mirrors fold in and out..trunk opens..shut it and opens again. Hear clicking sounds in the car and engine bay....at least when I wash I know I'm not alone.

Now the question is, is your car a decepticon or an autobot

This. Washed my wife's 2016 328i that we got a week ago and noticed that if the key fob is in your pocket it locks/unlocks the car so I just unlocked the car and layed the fob down on the table inside the garage. Problem solved!

Same here, (5-series), simply leave the fob out of range.

I had the same issue with comfort access on my E82 and E60.

I think they're capacitive sensors. They react to things which are conductive. So with non-sterile water, same result as a finger.

Why do you keep your doors locked while washing your car?

This! I always forget to put the fob elsewhere until this happens...

Went to pick up my 2013 with Comfort Access the other day. It was in the shop for the THIRD time in an effort to fix the damn thing. Touching the handle WORKS 99% of the time while it's in the garage and FAILS almost every time when I drive somewhere.

The FEM unit has been changed twice now (it's on it's third one). When I talked with the tech, he demonstrated the "water" lock or unlock "feature" and said it's a design flaw for sure. BMW doesn't know how to fix the stuff they build - what a crock!

I guess the solution (for people that paid for CA and want to use it) is to carry a bottle of water with you at all times. My faith in this company is fading fast......

Does the fob button work the 1% of the time when the handle touch does not?

I have found this system to be pretty good, but not perfect. The most annoying about it really isn't a defect, it's just that passengers have to wait for you to touch the handle before they can get in. When using the fob, just out of habit you unlock as you approach, so no waiting for the other passengers.

Do you also have problems with smart phones/tablets? If so, you may have zombie finger. If your finger is too dry and/or does have enough circulation, it could not have the conductivity necessary for consistent operation of capacitive sensors.

The FOB works almost every time. However there have been two occasions where I had to press the FOB about six times to unlock the car - I'll chalk that up to an anomaly.

No problems with a phone. Maybe the next time I take it somewhere and it fails to lock on the first (or second or third try) I'll stick my finger in my mouth before trying the system again
