Qustion about Assist

I was wondering if the assist feature works through the phone (connected via bluetooth) to the car or is a separate thing that connects to a central via sat.

Bmw Assist and Bluetooth are separate functions although its packaged and sold together in the USA. In order to use assist, your bluetooth phone is not used to make voice and send data to bmw assist HQ.

Thanks for the answer. I asked because I've seen mercs that work that way.

So how does the assist work? Satellite connection?

No. Assist includes essentially a "cellphone" within the telematics control unit which is connected to the verizon network to make voice and data calls to bmw assist hq. Bmw assist does use gps though to figure out where it is.

Yep, very possibly. Although Assist does use the shark fin, which tends to be a better quality antenna than those found in a conventional handset.
