Winter tyres without TPMS

Hi guys
Quick question. My winter tyres and wheels don't have TPMS valves. My F36 will expect them as the summers do. What happens? Does the car moan but carry on. Does it beep constantly?

I believe you can have the TPMS coded out so it used the old ABS system to monitor pressures

I'm doing exactly this right now...simon has it totally correct. I've bought some TMPS's off eBay as I hate driving with warning lights on.

Thanks guys.

Very frustrating as when I bought the winter wheels and tyres they had TPMS. My old car didn't have them so I sold them ah well. eBay it is.

Any idea how much to fit the sensors to the wheels?

Teaston posted a couple of years ago about a fuse-pulling option that disabled the warning light. No idea if it worked, maybe if he drops in here he can let us know?

I just ordered a set from eBay, £125 and the seller guaranteed that they will work with the tpms after doing a reset.

I'll be fitting the wheels tomorrow, so will report back then. Fingers crossed....

Edit - these are the ones I bought. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122207446726

I paid about 130 quid from a eBay seller (found the link on this forum) To get them fitted, I'm hoping it's going to be 40-50quid, but we will have to see! I'll let you know when I've had it done.

Just done this as well for my winters as last year got fed up with the warning light. Luckily local tyre place knows me well so was £15 to drop the sensors in. One advice I woudl if buying second hand sensors is go to BMW and buy the service kit. Gives you new stems and seals. About £50 for 4 but worth it IMO. Once sensors are fitted if they are the correct ones no coding or anything is needed on F3x. Simply pop them on the car, do a reset on idrive and go for a drive. After about 3 miles mine popped up with pressure and temps as per my summers. Happy days. Some tyre places still try to rip off that car needs coding etc. Might be case on older E46 / e60 BMWs but not case on latest car neither my i3 or now my F30 needed coding of new sensors.

Do they take the tyre off to fit the sensors? I take it was 15quid per wheel, not total?

Thanks guys for all this info. I have ordered the 4xTPMS from eBay as suggested above. Will go down my local fitter and get the valves swapped over and fit the wheels.

Just ensure they dont fob you off saying car needs coding, when I looked into few places to get it done so many tried to convince me they needed coding and thus charge extra

Not sure if that's for me. But my car has TPMS anyway. So no coding needed just a reset.

Wheels fitted last night, performed the reset and they're all working perfectly. Was a wee bit apprehensive at first as it seemed to be taking an awfully long time.

Good luck
