Razor blades - any alternatives to Gillette

I have been using Gillette Fusion blades every day for years. It isn't cheap!

I have been having a look at the online shaving subscription companies (eg Bearded Colonel / Cornerstone / Sterling Shave Club). http://www.alananna.co.uk/blog/2015/...subscriptions/

Has anybody got any comments / recommendations / experience of them?

Many thanks

The best move is to swap to a safety razor.

Plenty different brands, Merkur are decent, plenty nice sets.

Alternatively, go the whole hog.

If your local barbers, grooming place does straight blade shaves, get one booked in monthly.

Have them teach you and buy a straight blade.

This +1000000000000000000

I have a Muhle safety razor and a matching badger brush. Bought from the above company. I also bought a sandalwood soap (Taylor of Old Bond Street) and that has been a lovely soap.

I use Feather blades (I ordered a mixed pack of a few kinds and these were my favourites by far) and they are about £3 for 10 IIRC.

I find the safety razor much more convenient day-in day-out than my straight razor. Although I do use my straight edge for special occasions and when I go out for the night

I find both to be superior to Gilette et al in every way and it encourages you to take your time and allows you to be less aggressive with the shave, which reduces razor rash significantly (if you suffer with that sort of thing).

And another vote for this. It's sooo much better than a Gilette shave and way cheaper.

I'm also using a Muhle handle/Taylor shaving cream (which I prefer to soap) and use Feather blades or Personnas/Gilette SilverBlue.

To the OP - you can get a cheap handle from Boots to see if you get on with this way of shaving, along with a small pack of blades, a cheap brush and some cheap palmolive soap. This will give you the chance to try out the method for a small outlay.

If you like it, then get some of the above (get a blade sample pack, it's really amazing how one blade type differs from another. Start up costs are relatively high, but within weeks/months you will break even and from then on you are quids in over the disposables. Blades for pennies (they last a couple of shaves).

One other tip - don't start with Feather blades, work on your technique first, as they are bloody sharp. Once up to speed, they are amazing blades.

Muhle R89 closed comb razor: https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/...roduct_ID/4441

60 blade sample pack: http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html

TOBS shaving cream: http://connaughtshaving.com/tayscb.html

Brushes are another story, with different grades of badger hair plus synthetic options. Best left for another day. I use both natural and synthetic types.

It sounds a bit daunting at first, but well worth the trouble and investment. You won't look back and you'll never consider paying a fortune for a pack of cartridge blades again.

The subscription site in the OP says "there are loads of UK shaving subscriptions, most cost just over £2 per cartridge".

Even given that a cartridge will give maybe twice (inferior and worsening) shaves, the maths for change are compelling.

To the OP, I would also read some reviews on different razors (particularly the heads), some are very good but require some practice to prevent you bathroom looking like it belongs to a serial killer.

Soaps and brushes really add to the process and it means you get to 'own' some of the bathroom

But that's a whole different kettle of fish there!

Then you need a beard comb, scissors, maybe an electric trimmer, waxes and balms, maybe scented oils (if you're into that sort of thing).

It all gets out of hand pretty fast...

What he said ^ go for your first shave with an open-comb head combined with a feather blade and things will get messy.

OP, for your research, here is the F30post equivalent for shaving http://www.badgerandblade.com/

The forums are something else altogether and have obsessives that are every bit as passionate about shaving as we are about our cars!

Done, many times, including now. It's more bloody hassle than shaving though

I've tried a few different brands, some of those shave club ones as well and they're just not as good as the Gillette Fusions. I tried en electric razor before but it just will not get the results you get from a razor, especially for anyone with thick growth.

What you can do is join the Gillette shaving club via Amazon UK. I do it and it's £20 every 2 months and they get delivered to your house for free. That's 6 blades which should be enough for anyone. It's a subscribe and save item so you just set it up and forget about it. You can change delivery times or stop the deliveries anytime.

As I was due to buy a new batch of blades but I bit the bullet and bought a new razor instead. Used it for the first time today and it was pretty good although my neck has not seen that many cuts for about 25 years!!!
