2017 Land Rover Discovery -- Thoughts?
My wife drives a 2013 4Runner and it has been a great truck, but it is time to move on. She wants a slightly smaller SUV, 3rd row if needed in a pinch, and a bit more upscale/comfortable. My budget is around $55k, so thought about all sorts of options including X5, F Pace, Pilot, Highlander, etc...but all have some limitations that cross it off the list (ie no third row for F Pace, etc)
One intriguing option is the new 2017 Land Rover Discovery (not the Sport that exists today). Looks really nice inside and out, and checks a lot of boxes. I would be worried about resale value and reliability, but am planning on leasing so both issues covered. Any thoughts from the group? PS My trade in value for the 4Runner is $32k, and I bought it for just under $40k almost 4 years ago. Gotta love this ridiculous resale value |

I like it's looks too. But...
Reviews absolutely trash the amount of turbo lag. Fyi.

I've owned 3 full size Range Rovers- 2006 RR HSE Supercharged, 2007 RR HSE, and 2009 RR HSE Supercharged. The 2006 was bought used, 2007 and 2009 both bought new. I probably will never go back to the brand again. Every manufacturer will have issues but the problem with Landrover is they don't have the capacity to figure out a solution. I had electrical issues..nothing mechanical.
I think if you are leasing it, you will be fine. Unfortunately I drive between 30-40K a year and the trip to the mountains every year.... This truck did great in the snow but the electrical problems were too much! This is back when BMW owned RR. I can't imagine it being any better with Tata taking over.

Their, many may be more accurate, service departments have nightmarish reputations too. I've read of customers giving up and going on their own to get issues resolved.

You're selling them the car...a lot easier if you get what you want for it. Positive difference knocks taxable on new down. Lease or financing, same thing.

Does Land Rover have good lease rates? (I ask because BMW and MBZ have some very attractive rates - $150k car for $1300/mo is one example for the i8. Porsche not so much)
I always hear how horrible Land Rover is in terms of reliability. However, I know someone who has had 3 Range Rovers in recent years and hasn't complained about anything. I asked if they have had any issues and they said no. Still, I would probably want to live close to a dealer in case the need pops up. The car does look great! |

Land Rover use to have tons of issues so they're having trouble losing that rep but I haven't heard about any issues with the current models besides your normal one-offs like any other vehicle.
Most people that reply will say something about issues but most people won't have anything good to say about any vehicle you ask about. Post a Ferrari and someone will complain about your wheel choice or say Lambo is better. ha ha I drove a Discovery Sport and it felt slow but I drove a Macan S right before so that's not really fair. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. Finally, if you want a killer deal, don't dismiss the Lexus NX Turbo F-Sport. It felt slightly faster than the Discovery. You have to get the F-Sport IMO though. Some people love the predator grille, some people hate it. I personally love it and don't give af.

Brother in law just got a Disco Sport, what I like is it bridges the size gap. X3 and Q5 etc are too small, X5 and Q7 too big, this is slap in the middle, especially the larger boot.
Great ergonomics, very well designed. But yeah, engine is a bit meh but who really cares? |

Friend had one and had a problem where engineers had to fly out and inspect. I would stay far away from that brand.
Plus the Lemons lead villain looked like a Land Rover lol |

Great SUV! But only if you lease it! They used to be my client and I worked on site at the US HQ office. Reliability is pretty bad and all the Corp employees made sure to lease vs buy them due to reliability. But awesome SUV, leased.

I liked the LR4 a little more. Looked more like the true descendant of the classic Discovery's. That and the new one looks a little too Ford Explorer-like to me
That being said it does seem to be better in every way on paper. Will definitely be a consideration as opposed to an X5 when I'm ready to cross that bridge. |

I grabbed an MB GLK 250 4matic, the thing is pretty comfortable, smallish and gets great fuel economy. 30+mpg and I don't drive it for fuel economy. The thing has gobs of torque, 369ft/lbs and almost no noticeable turbo lag. Before I bought I did a fair amount of reading and was hard pressed to find any negative reviews.
Just my two cents. |

Grand Cherokee Overland, my wife loves hers. Have had 0 issues and plenty of features for the price. Chryslers unconnect is a pretty solid interface as well, different from idrive but good.

I'd buy a FCA vehicle before I even considered a land rover My 6.7 cummins equipped FCA vehicle has been very good and the few issue's I've had were just dealt with by FCA. No fuss, no muss, no haggling....they just dealt with it.....and extended warranty price was very reasonable |

XC90 would be my choice. Our RR sport is a great car. Has had several electronic issues and the infotainment stuff is just god awful. I hate it when I put the car in reverse and it takes 15 seconds for the backup camera to show up.

I sat in Land Rover Discovery Sport and was disappointed by that SUV .There was a real Discovery that was built like tank and liked that vehicle .
I see, it's a replacement for an outgoing model but I expected it to be more solid .Another nitpick , as much as I love hockey that puck shaped rising tea source resemblance so called gear knob is not my thing , a proper gear stick is the way to go

We have this as well with the Hemi. It was my wife's car but I just bought it at lease-end to be my DD. We were literally 20,000 miles under on our lease so it was a no-brainer to buy it. Even wholesale was $4k more than the buyout. I've always thought the UConnect was nicely done (the best I've used outside of iDrive). It was a make-or-break car for FCA so they threw everything at it and it shows.
