Alonso in the Indy 500
Just like Clark, Hill, and Fittipaldi, a world champion comes to Indy.
https://drivetribe.com/p/Vc82cpGpT8C...source=organic Need to correct my lead-in sentence...There's many more world champions that have come to the brickyard (starting in '52 with Ascari). Here's the full list of drivers and their results...https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/n...paigns-892968/ Last edited by 3798j; 04-12-2017 at 03:12 PM.. Reason: correcting my error |

I saw this all over social media! This is crazy!!!
Would be awesome to hear his take on Indycar vs. F1. I can imagine it'll be like "in one race, I passed more cars than in my entire F1 career!"

Indycar definitely need more publicity and having a world known/F1 champ like Alonso will definitely help!
I'm watching alone just because Alonso is competing. I generally watch on/off but this year...won't miss it. |

Doesn't Nelson Piquet Sr still have a few pounds of steel holding his legs together from when he tried to race Indy 500?

Is anyone else saddened by this? Yeah, it'll be cool to see him race at Indy, but it just solidifies how his F1 career is effectively over while he's at McLaren Honda.
He's basically saying that he'll score the same amount of Monaco points driving the Indy 500 as he would if he was driving his McLaren F1. He's one of F1's top drivers, and he's going to waste. |

If he's got a good car it will definitely be worth watching. On the other hand it's still a Honda McLaren and it's entirely likely that they'll manage to stick him with another DNF.

I was recently at a F1 Debrief show at the Sellersville Theater with Steve Matchett, Leigh Diffey, David Hobbs and Mario Andretti. This was the Tuesday after the season opener in Australia.
Steve said that he spoke to a high ranking official at the Catalunya Spain preseason test. This person told him off the record that he shouldn't be surprised to see McLaren disappear from the F1 grid in the next couple of years. This move to Indycar with Alonso plus McLaren's announcement that they're going to go back to LeMans is certainly pointing in this direction.

They sure do. I watch both series. I'm excited for Alonso! Bold move, I'm surpried McLaren is letting him race a one off event during the season.

I am worried about this tbh. Fred is one of my favourite drivers in F1, and certainly with LH, Max and SV he is the cream of the crop. But what experience has he had running at >200 mph with a bloody concrete wall next to his right shoulder? This could all so quickly end in tears as they say back in the U.K.

Associated Press's auto racing writer, Jenna Fryer, has written a pretty poor piece on Alonso's decision to race Indy. The article shows she's pathetically misinformed about the driver and his reasons for racing at the brickyard. Thankfully she's getting flack, and many (including Mario Andretti) are calling her out on being so wrong.
Here's her article: http://hosted2.ap.org/NCGOL/NCSports...d694a5628996b2 |

Meh, female sports writer.
She contradicts herself. The same people who would be excited about Hamilton being in the race are the same people who will be excited about Alonso being in it. I for one will only be watching the Indy 500 because of Alonso. Dumb article. |
