Britain faces first pay-per-mile road charge

Last one for the evening.

The wonderful mayor of London Sadiq Khan plans to batter road users in London.

It would replace the current congestion charge and drivers will be hit with per mile driver charge instead WTF?

Older "polluting" cars will have to pay more so maybe diesel if they have their way with tarnishing it even more.

What's worrying that this could be replicated across cities to increase city council revenue.

Norwich is worse, they keep making roads buses and taxis only, or even pedestrian only! Can't get anywhere near the city centre now!

Don't get me started on driving in a City. In Edinburgh we have 20 mph limit on certain routes, soon to be rolled out to cover most of the City. It is on 24/7, lunacy, left wing/ green lunacy.
Next thing we'll need a man with a red flag in front of us should we wish to drive in the City.

Stupid isn't it! The only semi reversal was when the then Mayor of Liverpool suspended all bus and taxi lanes for a few months but that's sadly ended now.

Also has anyone noticed the amount of average speed cameras being installed on A roads within cities and major dual carriageways.

The probability of this happening is somewhere between zero and nil. London already has a charging system which only needs a minor software change to add the 2019 T-charge for older polluting vehicles (Euro 3 petrol and Euro 5 diesel). The cost and privacy issues of implementing a per-mile system in a city make it a non-starter.

There is likely to be increasing focus on larger petrol engines over the next few years, and their problem with high particulate emissions. While this has been tackled in diesels with the DPF, petrol engines will either need their own particulate filters, or some change to the engines to ensure a big reduction in particulate matter.

The media only seem to be able to concentrate on one issue at a time - 5 years ago it was CO2, now it is NOx, in a year it may be particulates. Along with diesel, petrol may not be such a safe bet.

This.

I worked at Manchester's equivalent of TfL when they were trying to put the congestion charge in and the issues around a pence per mile charge were too complex then...
