Handbrake possibly sticking when pulling away
Hi all, I have recently bought a f31 330d from a dealer with 24,000 miles and the dealer has changed the rear pads as part of the AUC scheme. After the handbrake has been applied, when pulling away, there is a squeal for a short distance. Is this just a case of the pads bedding in or does it sound like the handbrake is sticking a bit? As the car cost me a good few £££££'s I know I should nip back to them and they would sort it out, trouble is the dealer is nearly 300miles from where I live. I don't think this could be looked at as a warranty issue, or could it?
Thanks for any help. |

Sounds the same as a few others and I have experienced. Mine was the handbrake - I was told they cleaned and lubricated it and it is fine now. I ran mine like it for quite some time and just had it sorted when the next service was due as I couldn't be bothered to make a special journey to sort it - so if it is that it won't go away... So I would take it to your local dealer to sort...

You could have a sticky/rusty brake drum for the parking brake. BMW used to suggest gently applying the handbrake while moving along slowly, in a safe environment. Worth trying, bed the shoes in a bit, see if that stops or changes the sounds you get. |

I have exactly the same problem on mine. Haven't managed to get to BMW to have it looked at but it seems to release itself after driving around the corner

Thanks guys. Do you think this is something which is chargeable by dealer or a warranty job as I have only bought a couple of weeks back? I guess this is the downside to buying a car a long way from where you live and I can't pop back for them to sort it out!

sounds like the handbrake shoes (which are separate from the brake pads) are dragging slightly. They tighten and loosen with a knurled nut.
Not a big job if you're averagely handy -they are adjusted with a screwdriver (try backing them off one click that should do it as you don't want to be left with too long a handbrake) Heres a walkthrough, its for the 1 series but exactly the same for all BMWs http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=655621 p.s in the walkthrough he's tightening the handbrake i.e turning the knurled nut clockwise if you were to look at the rear of the car. You'll need to turn the nuts anti-clockwise one click just to back the shoes off slightly. |

Should be done under warranty- it seems to be a known problem. If it is like mine was (sounds identical) it isn't the handbrake adjustment (more than sufficient travel on the handbrake) - it is more when you release it it doesn't fully disengage for 20 yards or so - just needs a clean/lubrication... My dealer did it with no issues & it is an easy fault to demonstrate.

I've taken it to the dealer seven times and they say I have to replace discs (and are not covered under warranty - I'm still within the 2 years). The noise started at 14.000km and it's now at 24.000km on the clock and it still sounds the same... Anybody finally found the solution? Pleeease |

This has happened to my last 3 BMWs and I have fixed it myself. Permanently.
The problem is that the handbrake shoe mechanism ceases up over time. There is a lot of dust in there which cant escape easily which will react with moisture and cause corrosion or build up on the mechanism running surfaces. This increases the friction so that the shoes do not come away from the drum properly when you first pull away and will cause premature wear of the pads & drum. What you need to do is take the disc off, clean the dust out with brake cleaner and polish each of the surfaces that the mechanism has movement on. There are quite a few. I recall 8. 4 each side. When polished apply brake grease to the surfaces. Put back to together and you have a mechanism thats free to move instantly when you pull away, so no squealing. This should be a general maintenance job in the schedule. |
