I'd get a Subaru WRX STI if BMW stopped making the 6MT available to me.

Back in the 80's my first BMW was a 7-series, and they still had a manual option on all their models. I found one on a dealer's lot that had been for sale for a long time, because, as the dealer said, nobody wants to shift a car like that (except me). I got a great deal on it because the dealer thought I would be his last chance to get rid of it. In the 90's, I bought a 528 with a manual, and they were hard enough to find that I had to order it from Germany. Again, the dealer told me that all the manuals would be gone in 2 years and I should get an automatic because parts like clutches would be hard to find. When that car was 10 years old, I decided I would replace it as soon as something significant broke, and I drove it for 8 more years. Last year, I got a 440 6mt, and again, I had to order one to get what I wanted. There were no 5, 6 or 7 series available, but my kid is grown and the 2-door 4-series coupe is fine. I expect that the next time I replace the car, there will be some BMW with a stick. I wouldn't be surprised if the choices were limited to 2 and 3 series or maybe M models.

It really is a shame...I still have my 02 6MT maxima and I'll never get rid of it. I may just be keeping my 6MT 335i for a very long time, also and maybe shopping on the *old* used car market from now on.

I drove a ZF8 330i for over 5k miles, and I literally couldn't wait to get back into my car. Real world driving is just so much better with a manual. Despite how highly rated the ZF8 is, there's still that unsatisfying wait between the time you put the petal to the metal until the car does anything. Hopefully the reports are wrong, but for now I'm very happy with my F30 and love the buttery 6MT that I ordered it with.

If BMW really is done making manuals in it's new 3-series, it's back to old M-cars for me. Time to snag a manual F80 M3 before they appreciate because the new M3 doesn't have a manual.

would be nice if BMW was a bit more like Porsche... they said they will continue to produce manual transmissions so long as people keep on buying them. I know not every car is suited for a 6MT, & with the evolution of Auto's & DCT's it gets overshadowed, but majority of vehicles are improved by a stick shift! I'm in love with my manual F32

This is not true. The G platform M3 will inherit the MT, for now.

Exactly this... manuals rule, at least until they are no more!

What is the cause of the unsatisfying wait you are referring to?

It's the time it takes the transmission computer, DME, and traction/stability control systems to compute and select the correct gear when applying throttle. Also, the amount of throttle, steering angle, if the wipers are on, etc. all play into that the car determines is the correct gear for the situation. All this takes a bit of time. Even with the delay, it's still going to execute the shift faster than most anyone with a manual but when the only thing you're doing with an auto is moving the accelerator with your foot or perhaps clicking a paddle, that delay feels like an entity. Selecting a Sport setting does improve things to some extent. The general lack of shift shock in the ZF8 also mutes the experience and drama. It can shift so quick and seemless that it it's almost CVT-like.

With that said, the ZF8 is really impressive and by far the best planetary automatic I've ever driven. I'd be very happy to have it in any automatic car I owned. I really wish it was in my wife's 2015 Outback 3.6R instead of the CVT. The car would be much quicker and responsive.

I just did a build for an M240 and the manual was listed and selected.

Where’s your information coming from?

Yes. I always have a “next car” selected. I hate the looks of the Camaro but the other two are in my selection.

I LIKE to shift. I don’t really care if a computer can do it faster, it could beat me at chess too.

Agreed. The M240 is most definitely available with a manual.

I personally do not find quick and seamless shifts to be a disadvantage. I see no advantage to an automatic transmission that emulates a poorly driven manual. A rough shift can unsettle the car. Speed is about smoothness not drama.

I agree that the ZF8 is an excellent planetary geared automatic transmission. It gives the DCT a very good run for the money to the point where I would not be surprised if the DCT is not offered the next generation M3/4.

My thoughts exactly.

The Camaro is in the lead, for me; although, that could change in the future.

In fact, I find my 435i to be strikingly similar to a rental Camaro SS I drove during the summer.

The main exception being the C-Pillar on the 435i doesn't block the field of view nearly as badly.
