right now on the north american web platform you cannot add the M sport Differential to an X3, you can how ever add it to an X4 m40i but it cost $1300.00 USD. this is not the same diff, as is standard on the 2018 x3 m40i it was not an option till this year. it is an electronically locking diff that can lock all power to an inside rear corner in a curve, it promises to be a more engaging drive thru twisty roads does sound like what other car companies refer to as Sh-awd {acura} or torque vector rear steering assist from a few manufactures. I have ordered it, and I an eager to see if it was worth it.

according to this bmwblog article (http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/01/17/bm...-differential/), "starting in April 2018, the X3 M40i ... will be fitted as standard with the new M Sport differential."
another post says that the differential becomes an option on 2019 models. the post above suggests that there are two different differentials? |

Sounds very UN-BMW like to pass the opportunity to charge X3 owners the same 1300 they charge X4 owners for the same thing. but anything is possible. I would ask someone with a post april build x3 m40i if their list of standard features included the M sport Differential {2T4}

Sometime in April it was added to the M40i configurator on BMW website as a no cost option and base price increased by £1200 although just looked and that option has since disappeared so maybe delayed for 2019 models? |

FWIW, the Australian specs have now been updated online. As you can see, the M40i is pretty highly spec'ed, but it does show M-sport Differential as standard.

i'm not sure how often the average driver will see the differential at work (i.e., even in spirited driving around town, i don't see myself powering through the average-sized turn hard enough for the differential to kick in). the only scenario that i could think of that would maybe use the differential regularly is accelerating hard from a standstill (e.g., from a stoplight) and taking a quick 90 degree right (or left i guess) turn.

It's an option we get if you don't want to have an M-sport wheel or Diff
Most of our advertising material is noted as being "overseas models and equipment may vary", so rarely do we see any advertising material with UK/Australian spec right hand drive cars. |

The M-sport diff is a steal for $1300. I have it on my 335i and love it ($3000+ option). With the X3 being all-wheel drive, I'm sure it won't have the same level of effect as a rear-wheel drive car but I'd rather have it already than always wonder if it's any good. |
