Engine software update

My car is currently in the dealers for a noise I had coming from the engine which has turned out to be the hpfp fuel pump.

Before BMW would touch the car they insisted on updating the software, which upon doing some research this is normal.

Can anyone tell me if I will see any benefit from the update? Will it only change the engine software? Will the Autobox or the idrive system be updated too?

Just curious to see if anyone has had one done.

I have had a couple of software updates on my car under warranty as part of normal servicing i.e. there was no ongoing issue with the car. I think it is good for your engine to have the latest software where (supposedly) the bugs have been ironed out.

Most dealers won’t do an update unless a known reported issue will be fixed, at least that is what I was told.

Yes they did say that they hoped that the update would rectify the problem but it didn't.

Also said BMW had instructed them to do this before doing anything else.

if BMW instructed the dealer to update the software, this could mean many things most of which are transparent to the customer. Sometimes the most current software contains additional diagnostics which BMW wants to have on every vehicle since it will simplify future dealer diagnostics.

There isn't a need to be concerned.

I bought my 328i with 45k miles. When I took it in for its final free service I asked them to update the software, which they did no questions asked. It added to the time they kept the car so I got to keep the 340i loaner longer while they did everything.
