F30 320d noise after engine switch off.

Hi folks,

Never noticed this particular noise before after the engine is switched off. It seems to last for about 10 seconds. Is this normal? Seems to be from around the injector area under the engine cover towards the front. Car in question is a 2012 F30 320d automatic

Doesn't sound normal to me. Never had that noise on my e91 with the same engine.

Yea I am unsure about it myself. Interested to hear if anyone else experiences it after shut down as well.

Is that the n47 engine? Pray to god it's not the timing chain. Get that checked out ASAP.

it cant be herd while the engine is running and sounds like its from the front of the engine around the injectors so I would assume its not the chain. Its under warranty so will get it checked asap.

My 30D makes exactly the same noise after the engine has been turned off. Lasts 3-5 seconds.

I have no idea what it is, but the engine is running well so I'm not bothered about it. Could be a solenoid cycling; fuel rail or injectors going through a pressure relief phase; hydraulic rockers ?

I wouldn't say short trips really. Use normal diesel mostly. Not sure what it is, will book it in with bmw and see what they say. Can only be herd when engine is switched off and the drive of the car is unaffected so far.

My F20 120d also did it. Nothing to worry about i'd say, its probably a vacuum solenoid or similar.

My 320d f30 makes the exact sound on turning off/on at times. Was anyone able to diagnose and rectify it. If yes, appreciate if you could share the details.

It's the EGR valve cleaning cycle. Standard post flight check routines, along with the throttle body and waste gate actuator.
