328d F31 P2457

Hey folks,
“Surprisingly” Another issue with my 328d emission system.
Got the code P2457 “EGR COOLING SYSTEM” with FIXD sensor couple of months ago. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the cooler, the valve and even the intake manifold under recall # 18V-755

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...8V755-1757.pdf

I barely drove the car since. Less, than 200 miles.

Now, the same code came right back. Checked the valve, seems to work fine to me.

Two questions:

1: is there any “warranty” after the recall was done, or I’ll be charged with all the nicety bmw can think of, if I bring it back to the dealer?

2: I was about to go for a longer trip - about 500 miles round trip - with the car on July 4th weekend. Is there any risk, that it would cause serious problem?

Thank in advance.

I have to add, that I’m way over California emissions warranty. Warranty covered my car until 70k. I have 86k in it.

Any chance you have the BMW manufacturer code for that? P codes are vague at best.

And yes, the dealer's work should have warranty.

Thanks for the quick reply. Which ODB2 interface would you recommend, to get the proper BMW manufacturer codes?

Sorry, I forgot to quote your reply earlier.

I'd get the dealer to get it looked at. Their work needs to be checked. The manufacturer codes would pinpoint it much more, but it could be simple, or not.

The code most likely translates to BMW manufacturer code 29EB00, which is for "EGR Cooler plausibility: cooler efficiency too low or egr cooler bypass flap faulty".

The flap is vacuum actuated receiving vacuum from a solenoid. It could be as simple as vacuum line disconnected or broken.

Enabled, you are right, it is translates to BMW code 29EB00 - just read it with bimmerlink.
EGR seems to work fine, intake air temperature always below 34 Celsius. No other error codes. Also, did a scan with another utility - "Car Scanner" - all sensors in green, except EGR Monitor Bank1 Test ID $83. It shows 0.1 Celsius.
I'm not an expert of EGR, or Diesel engines for that matter. Is there a way I could find the fault? Broken / disconnected vacuum line or bad sensor?
Bimmerlink error report and photo of Car scanner read attached.

PS: I know about the other errors, Cylinder 4 injector will be replaced and programmed tomorrow.

If the dealer just did egr work, you really should get them to fix the issue. They were in that location last. There is no reason why you need to be fixing their mistake.

I am completely unsure if that car scanner software has any accuracy whatsoever. You need software that can read the temps from the various sensors live. Most of that proper software is on windows computers. Trying to do it from phone can be awkward and incomplete.

You also should look at the egr cooler and find the vacuum actuator that controls the internal bypass flap. It should move relatively easy with actuator removed. It should also have a vacuum line going to it from a solenoid.

I have same problem with 29eb00 error, I've changed egr elektro Valve, but code show's again after 200km (dynamic driving), I also checked vacuum actuator and it looks ok
Next steep I'm gonna look at temp sensor it is not to dirty but I don't have any diagnostic tools only obd2.
Any ideas what I can do more ??

I Wanted to give an update on this, hoping, that this will help others with similar code.
Enabled, you were right, thank you for the advice.
It turned out - after months of additional error codes popping up (including Emission and injector codes) many visits of the dealership, (especially after the car didn’t run smoothly) , is that - during the original recall EGR service - the dealership nipped the vacuum line going to the actuator valve from the solenoid. As a result, the EGR cooler was working all the time, causing major carbon build up in the cylinder heads. They ended up fixing it for free, it took 92 day All together. They had to replace the injectors, they did carbon blasting, replaced the intake manifold among many others parts.
Since then - 2020 January, over 4000 miles driven since - the cars runs perfectly.
👌🏻👍🏻🤞🏻

As you see it in my previous post, check the vacuum line. Good luck!
