Broken Lug Bolt Issue
Got a set of new stance SF08 wheels about six weeks ago from Vibe Motorsports.
This weekend started feeling some unusual vibration but I first attributed it to the road. Longer I felt it more I knew it wasn't normal. Felt it coming from right rear. Car was due for oil change so decided to get that done and let them look at vibration issue. I had searched tire for a bolt or something in it but found nothing. Never thought to check lugs as I had torqued them myself. Dealer calls and tells me 2 bolts are broken off and remaining 3 had loosened! Broken bolts had to be removed from hub. Of course they suggested I over torqued but I had done them myself with a torque wrench to 80ft lb. So began the search to figure out why it broke... Dealer claimed the wheel bore size wasn't large enough to fit over hub centric ring. Vibe claimed there was no way Stance would cut wheels to 72mm bore as the dealer suggested. Finally I have pics from dealer that I believe to be conclusive. Hub is 72.56mm as expected Wheels are at the widest 72mm. So wheel was not being fully seated against hub which caused stress ok bolts to break. Thankfully I didn't have a wheel come off. Now working for some sort of resolution to all this with Vibe/Stance. Thoughts? |

So if I follow you right, you just got incorrectly sized hub rings which forced your lug bolts to not seat the rim right? And the solution is new/correct hub rings?

These seem to be only bored to 72mm as the measurements show. So they were not able to fully seat against the hub which caused limited thread engagement and the bolts to break. The front wheels seem good as far as I and dealer could tell. The rears were not. I'll likely remove the front wheels and measure the bore size just to be sure. Luckily nothing worse happened. Think I was quite lucky it's only a couple broken bolts. For now I drove the car home very gingerly and will park it until I get new wheels in. Vibe Motorsports seems to be stepping up the plate here so that's been really good despite it being Stance Wheels fault and not theirs. They told me to send out the bills for all the issue and they'll take care of it. Hopefully everything goes through smoothly. I want to get it back on the road, safely..... Whew! Man, that's good. I watched a wheel fall off this guy's car once on the street. That was NOT pretty.
But amazing how less than 1/2mm can make such a difference! Glad you caught it in time too! |

That's pretty awesome of Vibe to just send new wheels instead of making you send them back and have them redrilled .56mm larger.

But given I don't have stock wheels anymore I really need new ones before I can send these back. Only way I could get them off would be to leave the car on Jack stands in my driveway which I'd rather not do. For now I drove it home gingerly and will leave it parked until I get wheels swapped. |

That's whack - makes me wonder about the QC or spec being done.
Also as someone else mentioned, M14 lugs are to be torqued to 140 NM

Finally got new wheels in Saturday.
fit perfectly now. Had them mounted today and installed on car this evening. Only new issue is the bolts they sent are 14x1.5 instead of 14x1.25 as stock so they wouldn't thread in...... Had to reuse stock ones for now. Sent Old wheels back. Now hopefully I get reimbursed as promised for all the expenses I've faced from this. |

As were the first set of aftermarket ones they gave me Since I had some break they sent me a new hardware set but they're 14x1.5. Glad I didn't force them in... I didn't pay for new wheels. I'm referring to expenses in diagnosing the issue and removing broken bolts from hub that I had to pay BMW for. Also the fees for dismount and remount and rebalancing etc. Not to mention I had no car for 2wks but disregarding that.. |
