Whistling sound at 1700-2000RPM

I've recently noticed a faint whistling noise while accelerating from a stop. It always starts around 1700RPM and drops off after about 2000RPM. It pretty much appears for a brief second until the tranny upshifts to the next gear, but if held in this rev range, you can hear it indefinitely.

I'm guessing it's the turbo, but not sure if the sound is normal or not. Looking at the N47 Technical training guide, the noise seems to coincide with peak torque (1750-2750 RPM). Has anyone had experience or looked into this?

I can usually hear a faint whistle at those rpms as well, especially if in Sport mode.

With the windows open it's even more distinct, yet still muted.

I'd say normal operation.

Check your breather pipe for splits/cracks and oil residue. Mine started making this noise and that was the cause for me.

This is a good point, as I'm seeing oil leaks from the intake.

Also noticed the noises change if I reseat the pipe.

im no deisesl expert but I know that its prominent at those rpms because of that sweet BMW turbo, you will here it even more if you went catless and let me tell you from my ordinary 91 car, it whistles
