With the 340d looming on the horizon I’d be holding fire & waiting to see how that drives.

not exactly what you asked ..... but a mate has the new s4 coupe, but after testing my 435d for a full day, he much prefers mine - marginally faster, more economical, more refined and comfier to name a few good points that he confirmed.
if it were a plain choice between the audi and the 30d, i would go with the audi, but compared to the 35d, i would go with the beemer, and the 40d would only reinforce this ...

Yes - I'd say M340d then S4 with 330d in a tier below - issue being M340d isn't here... So if you have to buy now then S4 (if that is the kind of car you want) - suspect if S4 is on your radar then the 330d won't be special enough... If you can wait then test drive M340d and decide after that... or test an M40d X3 against an S4 now which will give him enough of a clue as to whether to wait... Having said all that I've not been following whether M340d is confirmed for UK...

Indeed, ..even though the new diesel s4 has more power (347ps) it doesn’t seem to be particularly quicker than the old 335d, probably due to it being a bit of a heavy pudding if these figures are close to accurate
http://www.zeperfs.com/en/duel6195-8103.ht I’d wager the new m340d will have the edge when it arrives! |

330d and a decent remap will provide the same shove, RWD, and save him more than a grand compared to the S4.
But I am biased

Having had an SQ5, I can agree on the more economical, but the rest would be debatable, never driven a car as refined as the SQ5, it went pretty well and handled / rode well as a fair compromise. I would be looking at the new s4 if diesel was my thing... |
