Police warning system (not radar detector). Please read.

Hey everyone,

I have found a program for my phone called "Trapster." I have a Blackberry, and I am not sure what other phones it works on. What it does is you download it to your phone, and it is a program that tells you if there are any police sightings in your area or in your direction of travel. The only thing is, it is a user upload based system. So it wont work if nobody uses it! I am trying to spread the word about it so we can all drive like we want too and help each other avoid tickets. Best of all, its free.

Here: http://www.trapster.com/index.php

Tell your friends about it, because I think of it gets going and working well, it could be a great asset to all of our driving habits!

Let me know what yall think.

Sounds like the novelty would wear off fast, and people who spotted police would be too lazy to open the app and report it.

I remember the good 'ol days of CB radios. "Breaker 1-9er. Y'all seen any bears on 94 north of exit 330?"

People are good enough to report gas prices on the specialty websites, so this *may* gather enough interest to work.

Really inconvenient, probably better to spend some money on a detector and jammer.

If this were to pick up and get really popular, what's to stop the police from using it and just hiding in the spots that aren't listed yet and catching all the idiots speeding

The users haven't improved though and that was the issue originally!

It will work when it evolves to the point that a driver can just speak a phrase like "radar gun" and have his car beam his GPS-based position back to a central database. Wouldn't be surprised to see someone like TomTom or Dash figure this out in the next couple of years to augment their traffic conditions databases.

We've come a long way from smoke signals so I think communication system is much better now.

Works in Europe where radar detectors are illegal.

Surely this is a perfect app for the 3G Iphone? A simple click to report position and it would upload based on gps co-ordinates? The app would run and download locations constantly

Trapster is available on the Dash GPS (but Dash no longer makes the hardware device). There are several data points available (red light cameras, police sightings, just along route or general area, etc.) , including historic and live data.

The drawback is that the data doesn't show on the gps map automatically... you have to use the menu to check it, and that requires more multi-tasking than many people are comfortable with when driving at a speeds that require concern about hidden police cars.

If you could get data to show on a gps map w/o additional user intervention, you would really have something though.
