hi, i've got a 2016 328 d. it always seems to have a dusty, almost dry ashy engine compartment. it's hard to pick a specific location as it seems to be blown all over. i do have a long commute to the high desert of palmdale, ca so i don't think that helps. also we have had a lot of fires in California this year.
this past weekend i added a catch can, thank you farkle for the great write up in video on YouTube. it seems to be working great but i still do have the issue with the dusty compartment. any ideas anyone? |

The dirty engine bay is normal. Air with dust/dirt enters through the front kidney grilles, goes through the radiator, and into the engine bay. I wouldn't worry about it. If you feel you must clean it, a softer bristled brush would probably work well to brush/sweep it off.
Since fire season is just about over, I would recommend changing your cabin and engine air filters though. I just did mine since they saw "extra duty" recently.

I live in the desert and mine is garaged, but still gets that way. Is just part of it. Blow it off with and air hose and occasionally Hose rinse under the hood ( no high pressure water From a pressure washer)

My 328d came from Las Vegas and it was filthy. Now that it lives in SC it stays as clean as my other vehicles.
