Tires for my 435i

I recently bought a 2015 435i and the rear tires are at about 4/32 so I'm looking for some replacements for when they get down to a 2/32. I'm planning on taking my car to the track at least once this year to get some experience and at the moment looking for a compound that will still be safe on the street with decent tread life. Currently looking at a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Does anyone have experience with the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ or have other suggestions for good street tires that will hold up on track? My tire size is 225/40 R19.

TireRack has a detailed comparison. Worth reading.

are your wheels OEM? OEM 19" staggered sizes are 225/40/19 front, 255/35/19 rear. i recommend you leave the rear size at 255/35/19 but deviate up front by increasing the front from 225/40/19 to 245/35/19, this will reduce some understeer(push) inherent with the OEM staggered set up.

if you want a tire that will work on street and track, all seasons such as the MPS A/S 3+ are definitely NOT what you want for tracking. at minimum, consider an ultra high performance summer with a max performance summer tire such as the MPS4S, most desirable.

this is what i'd consider. approximate order, best to worst regardless of cost

max perf summer:
1)michelin pilot sport 4s
2)continental extreme contact sport
3)toyo proxes sport
4)continental sport contact 6

ultra high performance summer:
5)falken fk510
6)firestone firehawk indy 500
7)general g-max rs

if you must have all seasons and willing to accept the reduced track performance

8)goodyear eagle exhilarate
9)toyo proxes sport A/S
10)continental extremecontact dws06
11)bf goodrich g-force comp-2 A/S plus

michelin pilot sport a/s 3+ or it's successor, the pilot sport all season 4, are not available in the size combo i listed.

+1 for info here. Check my thread for my purchase of the aforementioned sizes in PS4S. Excellent tires.

I have oem 19" wheels I am 99% sure they are the same 225/40 R19 but I will check again. As of now I am looking for all seasons so I can still drive year round until I get a second set of wheels. Also currently I am running Pirelli P7's all around would those hold up on track at all, nothing crazy as I have no track experience and not looking to really push the car. Really asking more to get a feel if I can make it through a light day just to get a feel for track driving. Also any advice for a first track day?

pirelli p7 are grand touring all season. I wouldn't expect them to hold up very well. see if tirerack has any review on them.

If you have square 19x8, i'd use 235/40/19 or 245/35/19. goodyear eagle exhilarate, vredestein hypertrac all season, toyo proxes 4 plus.

Even for occasional track usage, you should focus on (U)UHP tires with the stiff sidewalls, that hold up well and don't overheat easily:
- Michelin PS4S
- Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport
- Continental CSC6

The only price you pay on the street is slightly higher noise and less comfort. You simply can't go wrong with any of these.

Whole heartedly agree with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S as others have said. If you are in Northern Virginia you can't run them below 40-45 degrees F. Below that the summer rubber compound becomes hard and it's like driving on bald tires. It can also damage the tires.

I'm not that much further north in southern NJ. Another option that you have, which I did a year ago, is to buy winter tires now. Later in the spring when temperatures get into the 50's buy the summer Michelin Pilot 4S. A great winter tire that handles a mix of cold pavement, ice and snow are the Michelin X-Ice SNOW.

Honestly what I learned was that if you take your car to the track you will burn up your tires and brakes in no time. And the tires you want for track wear out to fast the rest of the time. I stopped going to the track years ago but I think that is why you see alot of guys with Mazda Miatas and similar cars track beater cars. Basically cheap cars set up to handle the track and not wear out your daily ride.
