Radar Detectors (Radio wave or laser)

Well, I have been on the edge of getting a radar detector for few years now... after 2 or 3 speeding tickets totalling about $700 over the past 4 years AND a new car that really RUNS......

I am trying to decide if it is worth it and which one to take?

The obvious choices that I have seen a lot of commercial on are the

ValentineOne
Passport 9500iX

http://www.1stradardetectors.com/Rad...FQOIFQodwl0ZPA

So, do you have one? If so, which one you have and how do you like it??

Do they really work??

I heard the cops are using the Laser detectors now and the conventional radar detectors dont work as well now as a result?

everyone here will say V1. But I have had both. The V1 is awesome on the highway as the range is amazing. If you do a lot of in town driving and/or in an aera where there are a lot of speed camera then i would get the 9500. i love my 9500 and it saves me every time and would rather have a second less of reaction time than my radar beeping at EVERYTHING. i put the V1 in my families "travel" car and for that its great.

EVERY SINGLE ticket i have had are on highways and interestingly, they ARE ALL ON NJ TURNPIKE (I95) between exit 4 - exit 18 when I head to North Jersey....

I even got pulled for doing 74MPH once!!! (I mean.. come on.. people are going 75-80mph easily)

I am looking to get one that is well-balanced in the city/highway driving..

In the city, I usually dont drive fast.. (road is not very good anyway).. Mostly highway.

So, V1 website has it selling $399 + shipping. Is that the standard I should be looking at (vs all other brands as well?) $400 as the bench mark, as I do see quite a few $1000+ models..

Why screwed on Laser? I mean, I saw some detectors that can detect lasers as well.. and dont most of cops use laser now?

but you have no ticket because you havent been beamed on, or because V1 really does tell you that you are being beamed on and you slowed down before you get pulled over?

How does it work anyway.. cops beamed you, you're going at 90mph.. then your radar tells you you're beamed, you slow down to 65mph.. do you still get pulled, since you did at once get detected at 90mph..

Most radar detectors can detect laser, but they have a short range. By the time you are hit with the laser and get notified, it's already too late to do anything about it. The cop will already have your speed and then catch you. Radar, however, can be detected from far away, giving you the ability to slow down.

For complete coverage, get a radar detector and a laser jammer. They are legal in the US sans certain states.

and yeah, my tickets are from the jersey turnpike as well. especially watch out for exits 13-15. They are equipped with lasers, not radar.

V1 FTW

You won't regret it. As noted above, it will beep a lot in town if you have it in 'A' mode. I keep mine in 'L' or 'full logic' mode and it works beautifully. It'll beep like crazy if you pull up in front of an automatic door, like at a grocery store, but that's its job. And with the arrows, you know if activity is coming from the side of the freeway and can be ignored.

Radar detectors can't save you once you get hit. They are just there to tell you that radar is being used up ahead so that you can slow down before the speed trap. As for your use of the word "beaming"... it sounds like you're talking about laser. I haven't encountered too many cops using laser, but the ones that do, they wait until they see a speeding vehicle before switching it on. In that case, you're out of luck.

Thanks for the input and yes, I was sort of assuming most cops use lasers now and hence whether it is still worthwhile to get radar detectors when they dont detect lasers as effectively.

A radar detector cannot save you against pacing, plane speed enforcement and direct laser speed measurement, therefore, in my opinion, eyes and anticipation where the speed trap could be are the best tools around.

They still use plenty of "instant on" radar in New Jersey. BTW, the laser guns don't work through glass, so they usually won't sit in a patrol car with the window open when it's cold. Winter is our friend. Nothing is 100% foolproof to avoid speeding tickets except not speeding.

I have two V-1s.

Get radar detectors. The LE still uses them quite often. I was driving on Rt. 46 in NJ and my radar detetor went crazy. I slowed down, and next thing you know I find two cops on either sides of the highway hiding. On major highways, lasers will be used (mostly state troopers) and on more local areas radars or lasers are used.

LOL +1. I couldn't agree with you more. One time, my detector (escort 8500) said "LASER" and immediately I knew I got fucked. It should've just said "FAIL."

Wow, thanks for your time to do this. I apologize as I was just doing a poll more than anything.

This topic does not belong to general discussion?

The V1 doesnt have to be noisy if you program it accordingly. Many people dont realize just how programmable it is, mostly because they didnt bother to read the manual:

http://www.valentine1.com/Lab/MikesLabRpt3.asp

Mine is actually more "quiet" than my X50.

I would check to see what kind of Lidar/Radar your county/city uses to gauge if you should even consider something like a laser jammer, which can be relatively expensive compared to a radar detector. You also dont have to buy the most expensive radar detector(s) either. There are some very cost effective and still very capable radar detectors like some of the Whistlers.

http://www.radardetector.net/forums/speed-trap-info/
http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...regional-info/

The best detector though is between your ears.

1) As your drive around, start to think about the best spots you would "hide" to try to catch speeders, like just past the crest of a hill or an apex, or in the shadow of a building on a bright day, etc..and slow down in those areas.

2) Dont get tunnel vision. Look around. Use your rear view mirror.

3) Use other vehicles. Watch for brake lights and sudden slowed traffic.

4) If someone is on your ass, let them go by, wait till they get out a few hundred yards and then speed up but stay at relative fixed distance. Thats your rabbit (bait). <= Best done with a radar detector and you take a chance with lidar.

The last 2 are very effective. Let other people be lazy or distracted and make those mistakes. In this particular instance the fact that people are typically not focused on the task of actually driving (versus turning the big wheel about and jamming on the little stop-and-go thingies on the floor) is to your advantage.

This is exactly how I limite my speeding tickets to 3 or 4 so far... or else, I'd think i'd have more....

I think I am probably going to go for V1~ thanks.
