Upgraded my audio system - Hertz 3-way setup

First off, my E90 320i comes with such a mediocre audio system I had to do something about. Searched the web (this site and some others) and got some ideas. However, the road to making it happen for me remained unclear.

1) SWS 8 option - Lots of hardwork and DIY and I have to admit I am purely electrically dumb. So, no go on this route.
2) Audio system option - Nice but damn difficult to get anyone to sell it to you. Called up online stores in UK and Germany and got even more confused by the explanations. Again, no go.
3) BSW option - Mids and tweeters and later the sub in the trunk and heard and read about it a lot. Sadly so far, only talk. I was very interested but didn't know if I have to wait another year. So, no go too.

I read from a forum from where I live that a certain installer experimented with a Hertz system and found considerable success without cutting door panels and modifying any part of the car. I decided to explore. Finally, I took the plunge and I can tell you I am now happy. So, here is my setup.

1) 2x4" mid-range - Hertz Hi-energy HV100*
2) 2x8" sub with tweeters - Hertz Space K8 system*
3) 1x4-ch 380W amp - Hertz Energy Power EP4
4) Audison speaker and power cables

* The Space K8 and Hi-energy components go nicely as a 3-way system. You can add a processor for an active setup if you like.

Since the system was set up so nicely into the stock speaker locations, except for tweeters on the dash, I have no pictures to share except the components. I would take a picture of my amp to share in the next few days.

If you have Hertz in the US, why not try?

Nice...

Could you post pictures of that woofer in the OEM enclosure? I was wondering if the Hertz K8 woofers could be fitted in the OEM woofers enclosure.

And how does it sound? Did you have Hi-Fi or standard (no amp) OEM sound system before?

Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the enclosure but it fitted perfectly. The sub was mounted onto a 10 mm chipboard and secured onto the plastic enclosure with lots of silicon sealant.

Both these subs now produce pretty decent lows and not harsh at all.

Mine was the standard without amp. Now it sounds wonderful with great clarity; imagine listening to someone opening up a can of Coke. Get what I mean?

Tweeter and Amp

Ok, here are some pics of the tweeter and rear-mounted amp.

1) Tweeters were mounted on the dash. I know some of you may find this objectional but the original tweeter mounts on the quarter-window positions were never ideal for a decent front sound stage. I didn't like it too but just have to listen to the professionals.
2) The 4-ch amp was mounted on a board and fitted nicely behind the rear seats. Very nicely done, as you can see.

1) I did not do anything to the remote and headunit. Everything is stock. Only speaker and power cables were added.
2) Probably spent about 600 Euro for the speakers.
3) Yes added a crossover and it came with the Space K8 system.
4) No navi for me.

he probably used an online translator, e.g. babelfish. he probably meant council as in guidance, i.e. if you can guide him and/or offer him advice for his install

If you have the Space 8" speakers, according to the website, you have the K8L system.

Are the crossovers which come with the Space K8L 3-way?

The 4" HV100s look a little deep, did they mount protruding a bit more than the stock mids?

No, I have the K8, not K8L. The cross-over comes with the K8 2-way. The 4" HV100 was added to the cross-over making it a 3-way.

No, the HV100s were mounted on an 8mm wooden frame to fit onto the stock screw positions. Though they look deep, they fit it pretty ok.

Ok, thanks for explaining. I am a complete idiot with audio and I got a shop to do that. It's pathetic I can't tell the difference between 2 ohms and 4 ohms, just that the final setup was way better than stock.

Sorry.

I don't think you can just wire in the midrange 4" to the two-way crossovers which are designed to send certain frequencies to only two components: an 8" woofer and a tweeter. Besides, Hertz sells some three-way crossovers. Here is a link to a three-way Hertz system:http://www.carsounds.com.sg/shop/ind...&productId=279
If you could just wire in a midrange speaker to a 2-way crossover, why would Hertz sell 3-way crossovers?
