B48 recall - cylinder head ventilation line
I was notified by my local service department that my 2017 F31 was due for a service and that there was an outstanding recall. I checked bmw.ca with my vin# and it showed 0 recalls. I inquired to the dealer and they replied that the recall was "replacing cylinder head ventilation line"
Has anyone heard of this? Is it odd that it isn't shown on bmw's recall site? |

Same I got this too . They were wanting to fix it right away. I'm a little suspicious never heard of it engine seems fine . But when I did the recall for the EGR on a 535d they literally made the engine worse probably putting it back together in a rush. The person couldn't even explain to me what the problem is exactly or what it was preventing just said it needs to be replaced. Is it the same as a pcv valve ?

I was contacted by a local dealer I have dealt with telling me about a "recall" on the coolant expansion tank line on my B46 (or is it B48?) equipped F31. Turned out to be a service bulletin, not a "recall" in the NHTSA sense.
Was supposed to be done this past Friday, but work got busy and I called to confirm that it wasn't a critical item, but a "next service" item. Not exactly the same thing you're getting though. Curious to know more. |

Add me to the list of confused owner. Dealer calls out of the blue, describing the issue as a "service action like a recall." They were anxious for me to bring it in that same week. It all sounded sketchy. But I'm glad to see these posts to help validate that my dealer wasn't trying to pull a fast one on me.
I scheduled the appointment for end of month, but am keen to hear if anyone got the work done. |

Service action is something that needs to be done, but unlike a recall doesn't pose an immediate safety concern. You'd think a dealer would know the difference.

Posting to this thread so I can keep up with this, I've got a 17 330i B48 but haven't heard anything from anyone about it. If someone finds out what it is exactly that needs to be replaced, please let us know.

The only reason I questioned it was because I got a message from the dealer that I was due for a service soon and did I want to schedule one. My warranty is now up, along with it the service package. So I asked if my service was still covered, and they replied "no, but there is a recall on your car too". I checked my vin online and didn't see a recall so I was suspicious that it was just a way of getting me in, which felt a bit greasy. I asked why this recall didn't show up online and they didn't really have an answer.

Update: Picked up my car from the dealer, and it's a valid service action to replace the plastic coolant vent line with a rubber line. The document/service action ID is "SI B17 01 21" Appears to impact 2er's as well: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1904752 No charge despite being out of warranty.

I had it replaced last week while I was doing my oil service.
My dealer noticed me about that, while he was making an appointment for service. It tooks about 3,5h - 4h of work including oil service. |

I just googled this issue and this thread popped up to which I already had a profile to be able to comment on this.
2019 430i GC with 30k miles. Was driving on freeway, normal driving. Got a message on the dash that said "Engine Temperature too high. Drive moderately to cool engine. If temperatures increases again, consult service center". Thought that was really strange. Couple minutes later I get the generic "Coolant low, please top up when you have a chance" or something to that affect...like the regular coolant low message. Then I get the engine temperature message again. At this point I am looking to pull over. Then I get in red (not amber like previous messages) "Engine Overheated, turn off engine when safe" and it went into limp mode, and I pulled over immediately. Called AAA and towed it to the dealer. For what its worth, the coolant gauge on the dash was always normal. Never spiked. I went to vehicle check while this was happening before turning car off too, and it said engine oil level was OK. Dropped off at BMW that evening. Next day I get SA call me and says there is a "Service Action" out for a Coolant Vent hose that goes from the reservoir to the cylinder head and they determined this was the issue. I asked if the vent was blocked or what..they said it was leaking coolant. I was confused because I thought a vent is a vent for air... Anyway - all under warranty so picking it up tomorrow but I am really nervous about coolant issues and permanent damage to the engine. Car is under its original 4 year/50k which I think expires this summer as we bought mid 2018. |

I just had the Cylinder Head Expansion hose fail on me on the highway last night on the way to see a friend. That was a PITA to remove on my F30 B46. You have to remove the ECU harness and holder to access the hose under the intake manifold. The part has had 3 revisions. In the F31 and F30 made in 2017, the part has long since been discontinued, and after looking at the part itself, I can see why. I found the latest revision: 17125A05950 on ebay since all the major part sellers had it listed as back ordered. 50$ after shipping and tax.

Thank you for the follow up, pictures, and part numbers. I tried to contact my dealer about it but after considering the frustration with their automated system, the one hour drive, and having to leave it there all day I may just pony up the $50 and do it myself instead. Probably come out ahead.

I finished the reinstall today. The huge problem is the bleeding process of the car. you'll need a pneumatic system to air purge the entire coolant system. This tool, essentially pulls out all the air and replaces the volume with fluid without introducing air bubbles into the system.
I looked up the repair manual in ISTA, and it says to use a venturi based bleeding system, something like this (which I happen to have) https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...l/003466sch01/ Once you use the air purge tool to get about -15hg to -25hg (you'll never hit 30), and as long as it holds for up to 30 seconds, then you know your system is air tight. Once the system is air purged, you use the purge tool to fill the car with coolant. Now, once that is complete, you'll need to perform the cars bleed procedure. It goes like this: 1) turn on the ignition but don't start the car. 2) Turn on the heat, and max out the temperature for driver and passenger, and turn the blower speed to its lowest setting. 3) turn the low beams on (not auto mode. turn the dial for the headlights to the far right. This should turn on the low beams. Then turn on the hazard lights. 3) hold down the gas peddle for 10 seconds. 1 one thousand, 2 1 thousand, etc etc. 4) turn the car on. The car should automatically idle to 1200 rpms and hold. (this will last for 11 minutes, but there is more that you must do during this 11 minute period) With the car running, perform the following: - wait 10 seconds after the car turns on, and rev the engine to 3krpm and hold for ten seconds. - then let off and wait 10 more seconds. - rev to 3k rpm and hold for 10 seconds - idle for 10 seconds - rev 3k for 10 - idle for 10 - rev 3k for 10 - idle for 10 - rev to 3k rpm for 10 seconds - let car idle until the car returns to normal idle below 1k rpm. The bleed procedure is now complete. Open reservoir and check fluid level. When I did it, I had the reservoir topped off. (almost overflowing). When I was done, I used a turkey baster to remove excess fluid down to the max indicator which you can see inside the reservoir. That should do it. You should be fully bled. Why the need for the air purge tool? BMW Factory Service manual (ISTA) has warnings all over the place. They basically state this: "Non-compliance of the bleed procedure could cause permanent damage to the engine". My guess is, air pockets inside the block could cause hot spots that could warp the block. So your safest bet, get the air purge tool, and keep it for future use. 78$ + the 50$ hose, isn't so bad, all things considered. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Mine goes into the dealer next week to have this done. They said they'd need 4-5 hours.

Good work! I ended up getting the purge tool for routine maintenance anyway, so no huge trouble. How difficult was the line itself to get to? I've watched a few how to videos, they range from removing the intake and half of the accessory drive to essentially nothing while doing strange contortions.
I sort of need to change my belt and tensioner, even if it is early, so I may go the former route...

Hey everyone, was driving yesterday and stopped at a redlight and my coolant started dumping out the car. Parked the car and noticed a coolant line broke. Towed to BMW and they told me the Recall is OPEN and it's a major issue, however they don't have the parts and they're on backorder which is why it's not being published or sent out.
Took the car yesterday morning, it was done by Close of Business. Dangerous situation because the engine overheats so fast. Last edited by matticus; 04-15-2022 at 01:00 PM.. |

Man. 2018 and relatively low miles. Guess we all need to watch out for this. Mine is on the way, plan on doing ASAP once it arrives. Part number 17129845173 like the one on your ticket. For those that want to DIY they can be found on eBay, although not very many at the moment. Thanks for sharing!

I bought part number 17129845173 back then. Still wondering if BMW will refund me since I had to do it myself before this "recall" Guess I shouldn't rack so many miles on the car like I normally do (I average 25k+ a year) |

I accidentally broke this hose a few weeks ago while replacing the coolant sensor.
Reading this thread, I now understand why it broke so easily... The line is of much harder plastic than all other coolant lines that connect to the engine. |
