Post-LCI U.S. F31 Wagon with Track Package repairs
I was talking with our mechanic yesterday about various dream F31 configurations — he’s a huge fan of wagons but wishes they would bring back the 5-series versions to the U.S. — and I mentioned the Track Package and specifically the Adaptive M Suspension part of that package.
“If I were you, I'd probably avoid that one. I don't think the suspension is particularly trouble-prone, unlike the window regulators on your E46, but when something does go bad, you're looking at a very large bill” was his comment. I like and trust him because he does good work and will tell me when repairs are really needed, versus those which can easily be delayed without any negative consequences. But is he correct on this one? Are repairs for the Adaptive M Suspension really a lot more expensive than those for an F31 stock suspension? And does anybody have any ballpark cost estimates for a total overhaul of the adaptive suspension? |

Parts can be more expensive yes as well as the aftermarket options which is slim. You'll find most people have bought various suspension kits without adaptive suspension and coded out their Adaptive suspension when replacing them.

Hey thank you so much! That’s great information and a very workable solution in the event that the adaptive system goes south.

I never liked the AS on my 2015 340iX. I think it was finished at 110,000 kms. I could not notice any diffrence in handling or stiffness beween the different settings. Replaced it with a (customized for XDrive) set of Ohlins Road&Track by a (Porsche) race specialist in NL. Incredible step up in peformance. A bit harsher on speed bumps but now handles like a dream on highways (200+ kph in Germany) in on curvy hilly B-roads (Eifel, Germany). This sumer it is going into the Alps for some fine driving.

As with every other option - you pay to buy it, you may pay to maintain it. Whether it is worth it to you is an individual decision. I absolutely love the Adaptive Suspension (I have LCI, where it is improved over pre-LCI).
The advise your mechanic gave you is valid for every piece of equipment on a car - if you want to avoid the potential cost for replacement of HiFi speakers - order a car without audio or with cheap audio.

Some of my most cherished driving memories are from when we took delivery of my wife's e46 in Munich and drove it through Germany and the south of France. I envy you! |
