Test drove an RS5 today

My M4 has 17k miles and I've been thinking about moving on (especially since I have so much positive equity the way the market still is)

No Audi dealerships in Phoenix have new RS5's so I test drove a '20 with 20k miles.

Not sure if there have been major updates for '22 but I have never been less inspired in my life. I know it's becoming a dated platform but the car is noticeably slower, feels heavier than my M4 for some reason, and the interior just sucks (except for the quilted leather seats which are really nice)

I'm not trying to trash this car but I really have no idea how they sell at the price point they are which is actually above the G8X. The car just did not feel special in anyway.

Sorry if I offended you, just sharing a personal experience if anyone else is looking for a change.

The RS5 is pretty old at this point and no surprise really that it lags behind the G8X platform.

I’ll disagree with you on the interior, I don’t think it sucks at all, the lack of color choices is it’s biggest achilles heel. Also you don’t have an option for a leather console like the G8X Full Leather option.

I’ll completely agree with you on the price. They’re too expensive, period.

This close to the B10 platform, this car is dead man walking. If you’re interested in an Audi it would be a waste of money to go with this car.

100% agree.

Not a slow car, but they are a snooze-fest to drive. I don't think it's just a matter of it being an older platform either as I much prefer the F80 which is even older.

The one I drove had a completely plastic center console and dash and alcantara door sills (which reminded me of a Civic Type R or something, just not quality) Just didn't seem to tie together.

The car in standard mode felt very sluggish but perhaps I needed to flip it into dynamic mode to get a true feel.

Wish I could afford an RS6.

I test drove one last year and I agree... I came away pretty underwhelmed. It barely felt any quicker than my m340i while somehow being less engaging, but costing $20k more.

It's a beautiful car though, so it's got that going for it. It's also pretty comfortable - nice seats, very compliant suspension, massage functionality. It's more GT car and doesn't really compete in the G8X class (at least it's not on the same level in terms of performance, engagement, excitement, etc).

This is an M3/4 forum. Trash away

Unless it's a Porsche. Then we may have problems around here

I've felt this way about the Rs3 and RS5.

They're great all around, just not a thrill to drive.

Audis have never had great driving dynamics. I test drove several of them on track at an Audi event, including early generation R8 and they just aren't that much fun to drive. Very unimpressive dynamically!

I think they're great daily drivers, and the RS5 is certainly a very good looking car, but they just aren't very engaging to drive and Audi just seems to not want to move on from the engine over-the-front-axle concept and an AWD system that is very front wheel drive biased that doesn't like to rotate in the turns.

Just look at the new RS3. They had to put fat tires in the front and skinny tires in the rear just to increase oversteer to get the car to rotate more and try to reduce some understeer. I suspect they will still plow like crazy.

And let's not even talk about the M4CX beating the very expensive mid engine lighter dedicated two seater R8 V10 at Hockenheim.

the last fun Audi was the B8.5

i had 1, wish i had space to keep it.

supercharged = zero turbo lag

DSG = zero torque converter lag (umm but it needs to be already in gear)

Sports diff - i once followed my wife driving normally along twisty backcountry roads for 3 hours - the car basically drifts around corners. when she turns the back end slides sideways instead of follow the front. i was so confused for a long time.

so when you're in the right gear it flies, sings, and drifts.

it was slow but it felt fast. my M340i, much faster but it feels slow lol

Audi has invested way too much budget on developing their headlight instead of their platform…

The RS6 is a super fast, practical, comfortable and luxurious family hauler. We appreciate it for what it is, but I cannot say it is the most engaging car to drive. I had more fun scooting around in our previous RS3. I’ve always found the B9 RS5 to be rather uninspiring, not that practical and not that great driving wise.

I dunno man. I had an RS3 for two years and wringing out that motor was an absolute blast. You'd think it was an exotic with the sounds it made and the DSG transmission was sublime. S58 sounds way better than the S55, but still leaves a lot to be desired.

RS5 is a snooze fest.

I think there is a more expensive M3/M4 "beating" RS5 coming out. I refer to it as "putting lipstick on a pig."

Owned several Audis since 2013. The A5 was gorgeous and loved the seats, the SQ5 supercharger ruined me for all other SUVs. Looked at 2022 RS5, but as I told the salesman, "does this come with a pillow or chamomile tea...because I feel asleep from boredom."

I've seen one Etron on the road and it had such road presence, maybe more so than the Taycan sibling.

Still driving my RS3 Until I get mine delivered. But no they don't plow. I only have a Sway bar on mine and its neutral with some light oversteer until your past the tires limits then it understeers but at that point your over driving the tires. I am running square tire setup. They can be world class once you get into suspension upgrades but they still are driven differently than a RWD based car. You go late brake, turn in, power out. You drive it like a FWD just like the RS3 Race car. Your not trying to balance it through the corner as much as RWD.

Agreed. We had an RS3 for 4-years, it was a blast to drive on the street. I really liked driving it around town, being quite nimble and super easy to launch while still decently comfortable on longer trips. On track, not so much, as it understeered a fair bit at the limit and the brakes were subpar. The track was the M4cs territory. But the RS3 shortfalls on track were not noticeable on the street. As a runabout to run errands, it was quite enjoyable to drive.

Audi North Scottsdale has this one in their showroom. They have another one but can't sell it because of the recall.

There is just nothing like it in the market, amazing car! Too bad they're asking $25K over

What recall? The fuel level sensor?

Our dealer actually gave us a small discount on MSRP because our car delivery was delayed due to the chip shortage
