Hybrid system isses.

Hi. I just purchased a 2013 BMW active hybrid 3. It drives in gas mode fine. The problem is with the electric part of the car. The previous owner has informed me that the EME has to replace and possible the hybrid battery. However here in the Bahamas, good BMW mechanics are hard to find. I'm pretty handy with tools and have been maintaining my own vehicles for years. I have already gotten quotes on the new EME and battery. However I would use some advice on the best way to have them installed.

You don't describe what the problem is. What are the error codes? To replace a hybrid battery, at least here you need a certificated garage with permissions to do it. What do you mean by 'best way to have them installed'?

So what is the issue? The electric mode never kicks in? If the hybrid battery is completely out, the AH3 wouldn't work at all.

Ill will try to get the codes. But the AC does not work and the car is not charging the hybrid battery. Not sure if the reason its not charging is because the EME is bad or not. The problem is, I'm in the Bahamas and the only local dealer will not work on the car because it was not sold by them. They will only do the diagnostic but will not install or code the what ever parts has to be replaced.

The electric mode does not kick in. I've gotten quotes on a new EME and hybrid battery. I'm pretty knowledgeable with cars, how ever I've never dealt with a hybrid. I'm sure I have what ever tools are required. However getting it coded is where I hit a road block. Any idea what scanner is capable of this or maybe someone who can possibly do this remotely?

If the high-voltage hybrid battery is at fault, you should not replace it yourself, this can kill you. In terms of reading codes and whatnot, I recommend installing ISTA on a laptop. Even Bimmerlink for android can tell you a few things.

When have you replaced the batteries in the trunk? Aux and normal? Before guessing more, we'd need to see the error codes to find the issue.

Depends on your laptop. OBD to Ethernet, or OBD to Ethernet to USB adapter. It's called an ENET cable.

Question. I got a quote on a new EME, which is more than half the value of the car. I found a few used ones on eBay. Is it possible to replace and code my EME with a used one? I also found a company that claimed to repair them. Thoughts on this?

these bmw hybrids are somewhat rare.

very doubtful you will get a 100% answer on this question as I doubt there is even anyone on here who has replaced their eme with a used one.

some (very few) modules are Vin married, if an eme is one of these is the question.

i highly doubt it is... but who knows.

if it were me I would try replacing it with a used one without a doubt.

that being said, i didn't even zoom into your pić of the module map but none of them were red... are you sure the eme module is not working at all?

edit : eme is showing yellow. so it's communicating with the car. all depends on what the codes are... clear them all, see if anything comes back., go from there.

I've seen someone replace their EME with a used one for under 3000 dollars, and having it working. What error codes are you getting? When was the last time the trunk batteries were changed? 12V and AUX?

Well, the car starts and drives, so I didn't bother to change those batteries. The issue is that that car doesn't switch into ECO or hybrid mode and the AC is not working. They were replaced with in the last 18 months.

Good evening Everyone

I am new to BimmerPost. I live in the Bahamas and own an ActiveHybrid 3. Bumped into this forum while searching for answers to a similar problem. Mikey242, did you ever get your problem sorted out?

Thanks

It look like battery has an issue. You can get ista and use test plan to work out through the fault codes.
