Limited slip or open diff better in the snow for a RWD car?

All things equal. Assume good snow tires.

I've read conflicting anecdotes about the LSD in snow / slippery conditions and figured I would ask the gang.

Thanks

One wheel vs two?

I still haven't found it necessary to have two.

The nannies on these cars are very good at not letting you do stupid things.

Getting moving from a stop would no doubt be easier with an LSD. Same as turning left a light for example...

I have an LSD on my Xdrive car and it has changed it and made it 1000x better. The rears in these cars are rather vague and unplanted around corners, in the rain and for sure in the snow. LSD is has been by far my favorite upgrade. An LSD will help you accelerate in the snow and provide more stability but won't help you stop. Tires are better for that.

Thanks. My concern is the potential lock when a wheel loses grip, and doing a 180 or so with a rwd car

Most LSDs don't lock fully. Now, plate LSDs can lock up to 40% which can be jarring in the snow. I'd probably recommend an helical LSD like Quaife or Wavetrac. They're progressive so they can vary "lock" depending on the situation. They're also very low maintenance, unlike like the plate style ones.

Did you get the M Performance LSD? I thought that you can't put LSD on xDrive cars.

Thanks. And for the quaife - how do I go about that one? My understanding is either I have to send them my differential and they put the lsd within my current casing?

Depends on the car. All 335i and 435i Xdrive or RWD share the same rears so you could put an MPerf LSD in there... if you can still find one. I have a custom built Quaife LSD with REM polished gear sets.

Seeing that you are located in the U.S. You can order one from diffsonline.com and also pay the core charge so you don't have to send your stock one in first. Once they rebuild the core they have with your desire LSD application, they'll send it to you and you just send back your old unit for a refund. I had diffsonline build mine and couldn't be happier. This job has to be done by the right person or it could get ugly if done wrong.
