Battery?

Ok so turns out my 2014 335i has the original battery from 2013 and it’s slowly giving out.

My OEM battery is 900cca 90ah.

I’ve done research and looking at a Johnson Controls battery from either Autozone or Walmart.

The price difference is about $100.

Walmart ONLY has a 850cca battery AGM h8 all that, for about $170. Although they advertise the 900cca online it’s not available.

Autozone has the precise match..

My question is, does the 50cca make a difference at all)

Are you aware that you have to register/code your battery after replacing it? When you register a new battery you can select what type of battery specs your new battery has

I did! I have ISTA to do that.. just concerned if it would make a difference getting a different cca than OEM. I know these cars are ridiculously sensitive on the electrical side

to my knowledge our battery is 92AH / 850CCA. so i would've figured you'd be fine. I'm still on my OEM battery, so maybe someone else who swapped can advise.

Not enough to worry about. The 900cca is oversized, to account for the use of auto start/stop and typical winter temperatures in Bavaria.
I don't see an H8 850cca battery on the Walmart site, only H7. It's only 80Ah, which means you'd have to code to use it. They show an AC Delco size 49, which is supposedly H8, that's 900cca and 95Ah for $187. If you plan on keeping it for 5 years or more I'd go with that.

Yeah man it’s weird.
Online they show a 900cca but in person that battery is only 850cca.

OEM for me was 90ah900cca. I’m in Cali though so winter temps aren’t really an issue.

AH (amp hour) is what is the more important battery spec. The CA & CCA specs is less important.

Have you called your local BMW dealership’s parts dept? You may be surprised if the BMW 90AH battery is like the 105 AH battery. The BMW dealership’s pricing for that larger H9/95R battery is less than what the general market sells it for.

For the larger 105AH 95R/H9 battery…my local BMW dealership sold it for $236. The local stores (AutoZone/O’Reilly’s/Advanced Auto/Sam’s Club/etc only sold a 100 AH battery for $239…and Batteries Plus actually sold a 105AH battery but wanted $286 for it.

The BMW dealership’s parts department was the best deal because it also gave the BMW CCA 10% discount…so with the discount and return of the $18 core charge…it was $227 out the door at the BMW dealership.

Again, I would give them a call to see if they are competitive for the smaller 90AH battery. It also came with a little plastic baggy attached to the side that contained an extra little black elbow (needed to connect the gray vent tube to the battery) and an additional plug to put in the hole on the negative side of the battery to prevent gases from escaping into the enclosed battery storage area.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info!

I checked with my nearest dealer, they have the exact same spec battery at $270+ core charge, with a 2 year warranty.

Ended up just getting an Autozone one with a buddies discount at $246 at 900cca/95ah

Too bad the 90AH battery isn’t competitively priced.

I just bought that ACDelco ($182) for my E70. None of my local Walmarts stock a suitable AGM. Walmart shipped it to my house for free. The label says it's a 900 CCA and 95AH capacity. It's a BCI/Group 49 but it only has a 3 yr warranty. I routinely get 7-8 years from my batteries so this isn't an issue for me. It replaced a Duralast H8 AGM that lasted 95 months. A 95AH battery should give marginally longer life than a 90 or 92.

Gotcha.
Just did the change.
Registered the battery as well.

Considering it’s a 95ah I read there’s no reading for between 90ah-100ah. So I should be fine not coding the 95ah part right? New battery was registered

If not an exact match you want to code for the AH just under your replacement battery.

Did you look at East Penn?

BMW doesn't offer every AH capacity so there's a good chance you can't get an exact match if/when you code & register. 90 or 92 might be as close as you can get to 95AH. You've got ISTA so you can check easily. Should be under Service Functions. Unfortunately you can't program/code to change battery capacity unless you have ISTA-P or NCSExpert. ISTA-D will only let you register using the currently programmed battery capacity, likely 90AH.

Ah yeah. I got a message in regards to needing ISTA-P when doen registering.
I’m just going to leave as is, matching cca and 5ah off should be fine I believe…

Bimmercode will do it. The options are 55, 70, 80, 90 and 105. An exact match isn't necessary. Code for the nearest AH not higher than the battery rating.

Ditto...Bimmercode provides "coding" capability...but you will need their sister app (BimmerLink) to register the battery.

Coding and registering are TWO separate functions.

I got this about a couple of weeks ago from Walmart online. In stores was not available, had to be shipped. Thus the designation "BOXED". But now looks like sold out online as well. By the way, if you sign up for free on Capital One Shopping (Chrome browser plug-in) you can get 15% on Walmart and 0.5%-30% off on many websites.

It's 95AH and I used ISTA+ to register it same capacity as OEM.

You don't have to use ISTA. There are quite a few scanner tools that will do it. Some battery retailers will do it for free, Advance Auto Parts being one. Google 'BMW battery registration' to find your options.

Hi guys,

Maybe someone can help me.

I have code 2E3C generator, type incorrect.

Can't find anything about it.

I've realized the battery I have installed is 62AH and the car is coded to a 70AH battery. Could that be the problem?

Thank you.

It could be. The car should not be coded to a higher Ah rating than the battery. 55Ah would be OK.
