Windshield wipers stopping in the vertical position

Hi. I have a 2006 X3. The windshield wipers are confused. When I turn them on, they wipe the windshield, and then sit in the vertical position, partially obstructing my view of the road. I tried every speed setting, and they always return to the vertical position. I tried forcing them back down by hand, but they won't budge. The only solution I've found is to turn the car off in the exact moment that they pass by the horizontal position. They'll stay put when I turn the car back on ... until I try to turn them on again.

Anyone had this experience? I am hesitant to take it in to the dealer if it's something I can fix at home. (I have a new baby, and I don't want to hang out at the dealership with an infant for several hours while they work on it unless I absolutely have to.)

I had the same problem. Loosen the bolts holding the wiper arm and return them to the original position.

i have a feeling it the later solution, not the former. if the motor was out of position, it wouldn't go all the way to the bottom, only to return to a mid-point later. additionally, it would overshoot the A-pillar while going to the highest position. take it to a mechanic if you aren't covered by the warranty, or take it to the dealership if you are. making a repair by a non-BMW certified technician can invalidate your warranty (if you have one), so be careful.
