Getting new 328xi on Sat...should I change tires?

Hey folks, got a quick question: my new 2010 328xi arrives on Sat and it comes with Summer performance RFT...given that we're running out of winter soon (I live in Toronto), I was wondering whether or not I could drive the car as is and buy winter tires next season...for a mth left, I wouldn't want to spend extra $ until next winter, unless it's a must...any thoughts? Thx

Summer tires dont have traction in cold weather. The tires freeze because the compounds are soft summer compounds meant to be stickier in the heat.

Well running summer tires where you get pretty good winters is never a good idea, plus once you take them off you can just save them until next winter.

Summer tires arent made usualy to be run in temps under 50 normally. The compound almost becomes brittle. Itll be like driving on ice. Not worth the risk on a new car. Whats the difference if you spend the money now or a year from now anyway. Thats what I had to do

Thx for the feedback and prompt response...can I just take the new ones off & put regular winters? (I understand the RFT have some sensors, so will there be an issue is I put non-RFT on the same rims?)

Thx again !

Take it to a tire shop and they will take car of you!

I know as well as you do that winter up north is not over till the start of may .

If you dont purchase now, youre just delaying a future cost.

My 328xi came with RF summers, and i bought Dunlap RF snows with an extra set of wheels. I have since replaced the summers with non run flat Yohama S drive tires - no issues with the sensors, just have to reset. These tires are great - ran about 10k last year, wear is hardly noticable. I'll put them back this weekend - Spring is almost here!

Best advice is do it now. You will need them up there anyway. The summers will be slick as bacon grease on ice, and you run the risk of a costly repair or personal harm if you wreck on those summers.

If you think you don't get more snow and ice, there's no need for buying winters now.
But summer performance tires on snow and ice don't work well at all.

Im in the GTA as well and picked up my car Mar 1. It came with summer tires. I have been driving it for a week now and luckily we have some good weather although negative temps in the mornings.

I did order my winter tires and will put them on this wheels next week. I bought another set of summer tires

Canadian cars don't have TPMS so you don't have to buy those. Instead our cars come with ABS speed sensor that monitor each wheel/tire rotational speed. This means you can run Non Run Flat tires and not have to worry about sensors.

Well, the iDrive in my car shows 2 TPMS options:

1. Status - showing all 4 tires in green.
2. Reset - once you've made adjustments to any tire pressure...

So, are you saying that both TPMS features are linked to the ABS sensor? If that's the case, then I have nothing to worry about when switching to non-RFT...(I assume the same applies when swapping wheels)

Interesting as the iDrive in my car shows TPMS menu with 2 options:

That's correct. This was the case on cars up to 2009. Not sure about 2010 maybe things changed but I doubt it. If you had TPMS it would show you the pressure readings not just the green lights.

10-4 !

I also double-checked the valve and it's rubber, not metal, so that confirms

TPMS still shows you green lights. No pressure readings

I wonder why Canadian cars only have ABS speed sensors instead of TPMS then. Unless the 2010s do in fact now come with them
