Puppy Advice

so I want to get my girlfriend a puppy!

The problem is I am completely clueless about dogs... I once had goldfish.. 10 of them: I had one die every day over the span of 10 days.. it was kind of biblical...

I want to make sure I know what I'm getting myself (and her) into. The last thing I want to be is one of those bad owners and I'm kind of afraid of getting a puppy.

First things first:
-I need a dog that stays small for their whole life. My gf has an appartment and no real garden so to speak, space is an issue and a big dog will break things, and I don't like big dogs. So if you guys can provide the name of the breed and a picture that'd be awesome.

- Taking care of it. How high maintenance are they? as I said, no real garden, what do they do when they need to pee or shit? What other special needs to dogs have? besides a bed and food and stuff.
My gf goes for jogs, so a walk is not a problem.
I know cats are pretty much low maintenance. But is a dog like managing a Sims household?

-Anything else I should be aware of?

Again, I am very scared because the last thing I want to do is adopt a puppy and then have to give it away, or worse, give it a bad life!

Thanks for the input guys

and as per usual, boobs for those who don't care:

you just compared dog ownership to playing "the sims"... Awesome

Shiba inu
Yorkshire terrier
Maltese
Pomeranian
Chihuahua

Small or miniature versions if you are looking for a pocket dog

Look for a Mame ... I have been waiting about 6 months for one. They are kinda rare. However a normal shiba inu only gets to be about 10-15 Lbs. They are awesome, sometimes they just want to hang out by themselves and be left alone. They are normally very obedient and tend not to bark. I raised a teacup Yorky till she was 2. I need a replacement.

Shih Tzu

We have two and they don't shed (my families dogs, not mine).

One is 10lbs and the other 11lbs. Both have GREAT personalities.

EDIT: Here they are:

NOT MINE (but a cute Shih Tzu for what it's worth)

That could handle my dogs poops.

But wouldn't you just be able to walk the dog in the morning, and right when you return from work?

My mother has a young girl come to walk to the dogs in the middle of the day...

be prepapred to be on your hands and knees cleaning up shit (mostly diahrrea), piss, and barf, 4 or more times a day for the first 10 months, regardless of what breed you get...then after that, be prepared to pick up shit on a daily basis, at least two times per day for the next 12-15 years. Unlike children who grow up, dogs, when they grow up will never be able to pick up after them selves.

OR just tell ur GF that u bought her a new puppy, so those are her new responsibilities that come with it..

AND THEN...when your GF says she wants a SECOND DOG...say fucking hell NO WAY...never ever ever agree to dog #2...you will go thru the above hell i stated above a second time, AND have double shit to pick up on a daily basis....

but if do buy #2, i swear to you this....YOU will hate your life if u agree to puppy #3....forget about it...just step out in front of a bus.

3 times the shit, 3 times the piss, and three times the barking....thats my life...i speak from experience brotha

just dont do it man...ur digging yourself a grave right here from day 1...not only do you have to shell out thousands footin the bill for the purchase, but you'll have to pay for all the food and medical bills that come with it...AND if thats not enough, u still gotta pick up the shit...because shes gonna think of it as u bought it so its ur job to clean after it..

IF she really wants a dog, let her buy it herself...that way, you're not stuck with all the "maintence issues." And then you can just offer to buy something nice for the dog like a bed or some clothes....

If you want to get her a gift that goes a long way, just get a piece of jewelry or a diamond or LV bag or something....dont dig a hole for urself by getting her a pet....cause it becomes YOUR CHORE. and she just gets to play with it...

Oh and BTW, the BATHS...dear god the baths,..puppies hate taking baths and hate water they will give you a hard time....she will want to cuddle and play with it but when its a puppy, it will poop on itself and gets dirty so now YOU are also bathing it every dam day....and then every week after it.....

just get a fucking diamond and to hell with it...she's happy cuz it shows that u love her, and most importantly it lets her brag to her facebook friends about it so she will be xtra happy

It took you 10 months to housebreak your dog?? The fault lies with the owner on that one, not the dog. Even 2 months is seriously pushing it. And each successive dog becomes easier to train because it has other dogs to learn from as well.

so what are saying? i should have quit my job to stay at home all day to housebreak the dog in 8 weeks...every dog is different and everyone's situation is different....what if i was working 16 hours a day 6 days a week???

In regards to the 10 months...i meant it took 8-10 months before their shits became solid and they stopped barfing everywhere

If you have a 96 hour workweek, buying a dog is probably not the smartest decision you could make.

And if barfing and liquid shit is the norm for your puppies, you should take them to a vet.
