Lightbulb Future BMW models information

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This post contains information about future production plans I've compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization. It is continuously updated: new research is added, and everything that becomes official is deleted.

FAQ:

- No.

  • The above lineup and schedule are preliminary and may be incomplete (e.g. the fate of diesels is currently unknown)
  • With the exception of smaller wheels of different design (18" standard on regular models, 19" standard on M50), the feature set will be virtually the same as NA0 below.
  • Exterior colors: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Brooklyn Grey, Space Silver, Fire/Vegas Red, Le Castellet Blue, Polarized Grey, Ocean Wave Blue, Eucalyptus Green

  • Will be made in Germany and SLP (SLP starts with one year delay).
  • 07/26: starts with non-US 50 xDrive (similar but not the same motors as NA5 50x: less torque on the rear)
  • 11/26: adds US 50 xDrive and 40 xDrive for all markets
  • 03/27: adds M60 xDrive for all markets
  • No major news on the packaging front, your typical 3 series car, the notable things are the availability of multifunction seats you previously could only get in a 5er or higher, more Iconic Glow exterior, standard panoramic glass sunroof, optional driver assistance at Highway and Highway/City levels (see the April 2025 update below), optional Security Assistant, panoramic vision with optional HUD, regular audio or optional HK. The wheels range from 19" (standard) to 21". Specific to M60: adaptive M suspension, M brakes, M steering wheel, multifunction seats, HUD, and HK audio become standard, the wheels start at 20", sport tire option unlocks higher top speed, M colored headlights available as an option, adds the usual M exterior bits.
  • Exterior colors (possibly incomplete): Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Brooklyn Grey, Space Silver, Le Castellet Blue

NA1 i3 Touring
  • Starts production in 07/27.

ZA0 M3
  • In production 03/27-10/35, only one version for the time being.
  • Do not expect powertrain specs here until just a few months before start of production (EV specs are not as discoverable as legacy powertrains were)
  • Powertrain aside, seems to be trying to provide a familiar M experience. Inside, expect higher quality interior with regular M seats standard and buckets (built with that newly announced "natural fiber") available as an option, M design trims and seatbelts, HUD as standard; outside you will see more of that "natural fiber" as trim pieces, M specific 20" wheels (options include forged 20" or staggered 20"/21" wheels), optional carbon brakes and M headlights. Purists will be disappointed to know that the panoramic sunroof of the regular i3 will remain with no lighter weight option (though the battery down low should make center of gravity concerns irrelevant)

General, non-model specific, and engine notes
  • Euro-specific bit of good news: S58 will be EU7 compliant.
  • BMW is planning to offer the largest battery among all BEVs on the market at 120kWh. It will go into the model that we haven't seen yet, and I'm not yet going to speculate on the car itself.
May 2022
  • Production of G20 has been extended to 06/27 (07/27 for SLP), G21 - 10/27, G22 and G23 - 06/28. The corresponding M models will also remain in production. This is highly unusual, breaking the traditional 7 year model cycle. I will be looking for more confirmation of this but I think the most plausible explanation is the replacement of the 3/4 series as we know it with Neue Klasse based EVs, as mentioned in recent interviews of BMW top managers.
June 2022
  • The primary production plant for Neue Classe cars for the North American market will be SLP. It will start with two models. NA0/NA1 i3 sedan and touring will be successors to G20/G21. NA5 iX3 will be built in parallel with G45 X3 (similar to Mercedes making separate ICE and EV models for the same market segment). All these models will start production in 2027.
  • G05/G06/G07 will be succeeded by G65 X5 and iX5, G66 X6 and iX6, G67 X7 and iX7. These will be CLAR based cars, not Neue Klasses, and as such their EV versions will still share the hardware with ICE and hybrid models just like i4 and i7 do today.
July 2022
  • Adjustment to G2x timeline: The demise of G20/G21 has been moved to 02/27, while the diesel engine emissions adaptation is now happening in 11/25 instead of 03/25. For G22/G23 that diesel engine change will happen in 03/26.
September 2022
This is a special update with a long list of future models, and their production locations and dates. The list includes very long term future plans, and as such they are highly speculative. There's no guarantee the listed models will even exist at all. This comes from another active forum participant whose search skills significantly exceed mine. I'm breaking it up by model series/platform, including only those with new information. Note that all F and G models are the current architectures with gas, hybrid or pure electric power, all N models are electric only Neue Klasse. Skipping China specific stuff because who cares.

(2025 - this is now somewhat obsolete, keeping it for now only for historical reasons.)
  • 1/2/X1:
    • NB0 i1, Germany, 03/28-02/36
    • NB5 iX1, Germany, 11/27-10/35
    • NB8 i2, Germany, 7/28-6/35
  • 3/4/X3/X4
    • G50/G51 3 series sedan and touring, 7/27-12/34, G84 M3 sedan possible within that timeframe.
    • NA0/NA1 i3 sedan and touring, Germany, SLP, 11/26-10/34 (SLP starts with one year delay).
    • NA2/NA3 i4 coupe and cabrio, Germany, 7/28-10/36
    • NA5 iX3, Hungary and SLP, 8/25-10/33 (again, SLP starts with a delay of over a year).
    • NA7 iX4, Hungary, 11/26-6/34

    • G65/G95 X5, iX5, X5M, Spartanburg, 12/26-[s]7/33

    • ND0 i7, Germany, 7/29-6/37
Regular updates
February 2023
  • NC0 is the chassis code of the next i5 (starting production in 2030)
March 2023
  • Production of G29/J29 has been extended by 5 months to 03/26.
July 2023
  • Potential G50 lineup: worldwide 318, 320, 330, 330e, M350 xDrive; US 330, 330 xDrive, M350 xDrive. Current production plans 11/26-10/34. Note that this overlaps with the production dates of G20, which means one of them is incorrect and will be adjusted (over 3 years until then, plenty of time for changes). Diesel models should show up later - or maybe not at all?
August 2023
  • The next in line to lose the "i": G70. With LCI, the gas models become 735 and 740 while i7 naming will be rearranged into "50 xDrive" and "60 xDrive".
  • The next generation of X5/X6/X7 (G65/G66/G67) will likely lose the V8 engine. Instead, M60e xDrive (same B58-based powertrain as G60/G70 60e's) will be the top model. Model designations will follow the same new structure as the G45.
September 2023
  • First shot at clarifying G50 lineup and release schedule: see in G50 section above.
  • Next gen Countryman will have platform code NE5 (yes, Neue Klasse), production expected 11/28-10/36.
  • The current plans for NCAR M cars, besides the already known ZA0 M3 sedan, include ZA1 M3 Touring, ZA5 iX3M, and ZA7 iX4M.
October 2023
  • End of production changes for US X6: from 03/28 to 12/27
  • A small adjustment to G70 LCI: 07/26, not 03/26
  • G90 will be in production until 02/31; not clear if that also means a longer production period for all G60s.
  • Planned NA0 (i3) model lineup: 40, 40 xDrive, 50, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Planned NA7 (iX4) model lineup: 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Planned G65 BEV (iX5) model lineup: 50 xDrive, M70 xDrive
November 2023
  • The date conflict between EOP of G20 and SOP of G50 (see July 2023 update) seems to have been resolved: G20 EOP has been adjusted to 10/26.
December 2023
  • The next generation of the telematics system is called EES25. It will be in use in all Neue Klasse cars, G65 and siblings, G70 LCI.
January 2024
  • Panoramic Vision will not be just for future cars. It will be offered on the models already in production. The first I see is G60/G61/G68/G90/G99, where this interface will become standard in 2027 (possibly coinciding with the LCI).
April 2024
  • In addition to the new interface, in 03/27 G60 will get passenger screen as an option.
  • B48 will get its fourth iteration, TÜ3. It could start showing up in 2026, with the US/Korean G45 a likely candidate.
  • G45 LCI is currently scheduled for 11/28.
  • 2027 appears to be the year when BMW will start moving to the new interface across its whole model range. Besides G60 mentioned earlier, it's now planned for the FWD cars: U06/U10/U11. I'm sure these are just the first lines on a much longer list.
June 2024
  • For many models, their European diesel versions are now scheduled to end production at the end of 2027. This seems to coincide with the transition to EU7. Apparently, BMW won't try to make those diesels compliant and will simply stop making them.
  • i3M, i3M Touring, iX3M, iX4M are now in the official plans.
  • Planned G67 lineup: X7 40, 40d, M60, Alpina 60, iX7 50, 60, M70, Alpina 100 (all xDrive).
  • G84 M3 is alive! For now, it's just a single version. No further details.
  • There will be another version of G87 M2 after the CS, probably in 2026.
August 2024
  • The long rumored AWD M2 is confirmed, called M2 M xDrive.
  • Added i3 20 to the NA0 lineup.
  • G65 X5 will push hard into high luxury. Expect many top level features currently only found on 7/X7, from automatic doors to interior details, plus all the UI advancements we've been hearing about recently: Panoramic Vision, Augmented View, AR glasses integration, passenger side screen. And BMW can't do it without yet another weird dick-swinging feature - this time, it's called Ceremonial Light Carpet. There's a good chance the BEV iX5 will only be introduced in 2027.
  • U06 model range will shrink in 2027 to 218i, 220i, and the hybrids. Production ends in 10/29.
September 2024
  • The European G2x/G42 40i models will use B58TÜ2 (like the US cars already do) starting with 11/25 production.
October 2024
  • End of production for F70 and F74 has been set to 10/30. The earlier information of FAAR cars surviving to 2033 appears to have been a placeholder.
  • Non-US G06 has been slightly extended from 03/28 to 07/28.
  • More European diesel models now have death dates in 2027. An era is coming to an end.
  • LCI for U10 and U11 is planned for 07/27. Will get Panoramic Vision.
  • The BEV versions of U10, U11, and the platform sibling U25 will get powertrain updates in 3/26. New batteries and/or improved motors.
  • The NA5 range will start expanding in 07/26, when two new models, including M60, will start production for all markets, including the US. The M60 packaging will differ from the regular model with M suspension and brakes, 21" wheels instead of 20" on the lower models, and several optional features like upgraded seats and audio offered as standard.
  • A new security related feature will start appearing in 5 and 7 series and Neue Klasse cars in 2026-2027 (i.e. the cars with the new telematics system), could be something similar to Tesla Sentry Mode.
  • Production dates for G84 M3: 07/28-10/34.
  • G50 will be likely built in Dingolfing. This might seem like a nothingburger but that plant can't really make a lot of cars in addition to the 5/6/7 that have always been its focus. Could this be a reflection of the projected volume for the gas powered 3er?
November 2024
  • End of production for G14 and G16 has been brought forward by another 2 months, now planned for 04/26.
  • All U06 models are now planned to end production no later than 10/27.
  • Some of the US market X3 30 xDrive cars will be built in Rosslyn starting in 2025.
December 2024
  • G87 M2 M xDrive production: 08/26-07/29. Confirmed automatic only.
  • Starting in early 2026, the Rosslyn plant will make US G45 (likely X3 30 xDrive) just like it did G01.
March 2025
  • Just like BMW signaled, NA0 and G50 are being designed to look very similar to each other - to the point that they're even sharing wheel options. Though NA0 will likely be considered a bit more upscale. Little details like both will get the fancy multifunction seats but only NA0 will include the massage function.
  • Dates for NA0 production adjusted above: non-US starts in 07/26, not in 11/26 as previously specified, and production ends in 10/34, the same time as G50.
  • Added model range for NB5 iX1 in the main list above.
  • Chinese production NK cars will be: NA6 iX3 L, NA8 i3, NB6 iX1 L. Their model ranges are now listed above.
  • G70 LCI will get an Alpina derivative that will be done differently from before. There will be a whole range of Alpina 7 series cars: 740, 760, and i7 70. They will have "Alpina" as a part of the model name, and the whole thing even gets its own platform code, G72.
  • If you're a biker, you might care about the fact that R 20 will be launched into series production. It will be built around an upsized and evolved version of the R 18 motor.
  • New style headlights will appear on M Sport models. They will have some distinctive color elements. Will be available on G50 and G65 first.
  • X7 Alpina will also have a separate chassis code, G69. This strongly suggests that we should expect the name Alpina to get a completely different meaning from what it was in the past.
April 2025
  • G60/G61 LCI will adopt the new naming scheme. New i5 lineup - in the main list above.
  • BMW will offer autopilot functionality in three tiers: Highway, Highway/City, Highway/City Pro. It's possible they will be subscription based. Will be available in all models with the new vehicle telematics (all Neue Klasse, G65, G70 LCI). North American cars are included.
  • The same models will get a 3D HUD. It will be standard on 5 series and up, optional on other models.
May 2025
  • There will be more than one version of M5 sedan and Touring at LCI. Competition? CS? We'll see.
June 2025
  • A whole set of production dates changes:
    • F70 and F74 will remain in production for two years longer than previously planned, until 10/32.
    • All 840d models are ending production earlier than previously planned, this September.
    • The U.S. Z4 M40i and both U.S. models of the Supra are getting an extra two months of production to 05/26.
    • G60 LCI is delayed from 03/27 to 07/27.
    • G65 will be in production until 07/35 - that's a nine year cycle. G66 and G67 will probably live longer too, I just don't see that in my sources yet.
  • I missed G78 (Chinese X5), now added its production dates to the list above.
  • BMW has quietly started building US spec G20 330i (both rwd and awd) in Munich.
  • Motorcycle news: there's a new motor for liter bikes coming in a couple of years.
  • NA0 i3 and ZA0 iM3 configuration details added at the top.
  • Some G70 LCI feature introductions that will later propagate to G60/G61/G90/G99 LCI: Chassis control, M headlights available as an option on all M-lite models, new optional software capabilities: Highway and Highway/City drive assists, Security Assistant. More alcantara use in M5 interiors. See the top of the post for the exact details.
  • Clarified NA7 production dates: M60x will have a small delay and go into production four months after the other models in 03/27.
  • US G42 M240i gets B58TÜ2 with 08/26 production.
July 2025
  • G87 M2 M xDrive is 475hp.
August 2025
  • The M version of iX3 will be called "X3 M" (without the "i") and will have the same powertrain (but possibly with a different tune) as iX3 M60 xDrive. It will start production in 2027, confirming previous reports by other sources.
  • In the spring of 2026, before the production of G29 Z4 ends, it will have a special Final Edition run.
  • BMW Digital Premium (see NA5 details) will expand to the FWD platform (F7x/Uxx) cars in mid-2026.
  • EOP adjustments: G45: 11/33->07/32, NA0: 10/34->10/35, NA5: 10/33->10/34, NA6: 04/34->04/35, NA7: 10/34->10/35.
  • Correction: the powertrain of X3M will be different from that of iX3 M60. I simply misread the data. Sorry.
September 2025
  • ZA5 X3 M will start production in 11/27.
  • The plans for SLP is to make all left hand drive versions of iX3, from 40 to M60x. NA7 iX4, ZA5 X3M and ZA7 X4M (which is still in the plans) will be Debrecen only.
  • The hydrogen fuel cell powertrain for the next X5 is not just an experiment. BMW has it in the plans next to the already familiar types of engines and motors.
  • An M version of NB0 i1 is under consideration. Obviously the chassis code is ZB0 but will BMW dare to call it M1?
October 2025
  • G22/G23/G82/G83 will be with us for an extra year, until 06/29
  • Production of the current MINI models has been extended into the early 2030s. U25 will be produced until 10/33 for the gas models and 10/32 for the EVs.
  • These two items suggest slower transition to Neue Klasse replacements than we expected just a year ago.
  • G45 M50x will get a powertrain update in 12/26
  • The augmented reality glasses idea seems to be dead - the option is gone from all future cars.
  • More clarity of NA0 model intros: non-US 50x in 07/26, four months later US 50x and all markets 40x, another four months later all markets M60x.
  • Dingolfing production confirmed for G50.
  • A long time since I've listed new paint colors: Inspired White and Nomad Blue go to MINIs, BMW gets Le Castellet Blue (Munich) and Grey Pine (Spartanburg).
  • Looks like the newer batteries in iX1/iX2 won't change anything in any significant way: the net capacity increases by less than 0.5 kWh, all other major specs stay the same.
  • G65 model release schedule for 2026: intro in 8/26 with 40x and non-US 40dx, 12/26 adds US 40, all markets 50ex, M60ex, iX5 60x.
  • One more paint color that I first missed: Vancouver Green for G65.
  • The hydrogen fuel cell G65 will be called "iX5 60H xDrive".
  • The general idea of G72 Alpina: take a G70, check all the option boxes available other than the sporty stuff, add custom exterior trim (and wheels of course) and a special interior, and you get the Alpina. Will start production in 07/27 (so, a year after LCI).
  • ZA0 M3 and ZA5 X3M will have the same motors.
  • I can confirm BMW working on EV versions of G95 X5M and G96 X6M. Can't confirm the ICE versions (but this could be just the lack of data, not the actual absence of those models).
  • The motor setup on the full-M EV cars will differ from all other EV models. That is, ZA0, ZA5, G95/G96 will use the same family of motors, though G95/G96 will likely differ in performance from ZA0/ZA5.
  • More lifetime extensions for current models: G60/G90 will stay in production until 10/31, G61/G99 - 06/32, G70/G72/G73 - 10/32
  • And one model gets killed early: G26 ends production in 02/27.
  • NA1 starts production in 07/27.
  • There's nothing concrete on the 8 series replacements of any kind, even the things that typically surface 3+ years before production. There's a good chance they're all dead.
November 2025
  • A rough analysis of NCAR/XNF motor and battery offerings for NAx and G65/G95 EVs. No specifications, just an attempt at making sense of what different models mean in terms of their hardware:
    • RWD (NAx only): there will be two motors offered: one for 20 models (currently this is NA0 only), the other for 40 models.
    • AWD: there will be three classes of motor combinations (sorry if this is confusing). The new iX3 50x is an example of something that we could call middle class. There will be another setup in the same class that will be used on most 40x models. Another class is possibly something less powerful (this one has the most confusing combination of applications, so let's leave it alone for the time being). And then there's the class that will be used on M cars. I mentioned before that M3, X3M/X4M, and X5M/X6M will all use the same motors; now, I can see that iX5 M70 will also use a similar setup, though with different characteristics.
    • Batteries: NA5 and NA7 will use two battery types: one that we can see on iX3 50x (will also be used in M60) and something smaller for 40 and 40x. NA0 and NA1 will use the same batteries for the same models, with the exception of 20 and 40 RWD that will have their own batteries, possibly with different chemistry. X3M, and X4M will use the same larger battery as the regular models but the battery used in M3 will be unique. G65/G66/G95/G96 will also use two battery sizes: the smaller one for 50x and the larger one for all other models. The cars made in China will have completely different batteries.
  • G50 engines: 320, 330, and 330e will get the new B48TÜ3 in different tunes.
  • G65 engines: B57, B58, S68.
  • B58 is getting a new revision, B58TÜ3. It will first show up on G70 LCI 735 (286hp/295lb-ft) and 740 (400hp/400lb-ft) next July.
  • Detailed schedule for G70 LCI models added at the top.
December 2025
  • Added the colors and interiors for NA0, G50, G60/G61 LCI, and G90/G99 LCI in their sections above.
  • New options that will be available on NA5: roof rails, rear seat heat, new charging hardware SOP March 2026; more wheel options and Individual customization SOP July 2026; improved wireless charging tray SOP November 2026; Adaptive M suspension SOP March 2027.
  • Added SOP for G65 EV 50x and M70x: 09/27.
  • Modified production dates for G67: two more years, up to 07/36. A brief option description has been added.
  • NA5 production at SLP will now start in 08/27.

Will it get the "pure version" of the S58 or a further upgraded B58?

You think too well of me if you expect me to know this kind of detail about a car that's still almost 4 years away.

It seems very reasonable given the G42 doesn't arrive until mid 2021. For the M to come a year and half after the Series model isn't bad at all.

It will be interesting to see how the possibility of a new M240i plays out with your previous comments (in July 2018) that the G42 may only get the B48. Of course that could have changed now, but it seems to me that a high output B48, let's say ~350hp, would make sense for a neo-M240i. It would be lighter than the I6. And maybe by 2022, B58 models will have adopted the *45i and M*45i moniker, opening up M*40i for use with the B48.

Interesting. And we have confirmed that ID7 is coming to both (including M variants) starting aug19?

Actually, I'm not sure about the exact timing of this anymore. Regular X3s and X4s - definitely mid-2019. But M variants could continue using the existing system until early 2020.

My problem is I have conflicting information and don't know which source to trust.

Very interested in this! Anything you can share, now in the future, about the car or even when or where it will be announced, would be much appreciated.
