Brake fluid service
BMW just quoted me $250 for brake fluid service. Is that too high or average price? Thought about doing it myself but no garage or driveway space unfortunately in my current living situation.
Thanks. |

Before doing anything make sure you need a fluid change. This will tell you:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The BMW service interval recommendation is very conservative, because the car has no way to test the fluid for water content. $250 for a fluid change isn't outrageous, although it is about $25 for fluid and $225 for labor. I doesn't hurt to shop around. |

Your situation may dictate circumstances, because it sounds like you don't have access to things like a jack, impact wrench for the wheels, etc.
But you can do it with little more than an empty drink bottle and some silicone tubing, if you have the aforementioned tools. |

Most places with a hand or mechanical power bleeder will charge you 0.5 hours of labor + the fluid. At this rate it's anywhere between 100-150 to flush it. At home you can do this with jack stands + a little time + basic tools and $30 of brake fluid

At that price you should consider DIY'ing it. Pretty easy with a brake fluid bleeder kit:

Here in Melbourne, FL., had mine done for $149.50. Mine was finally due according to the Moisture content (last done 4 years ago). Normally would have done myself, but work has been crazy and finding a couple of hours became difficult.

did it myself with this
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bra...-kit-mot0100kt and rented the kit out to fellow F3x guys in my area, so the kit minus the fluid was basically free. lol |

Local auto repair shops will sometimes take it, since the likes of autozone won't accept brake fluid, coolant, atf etc. Also check your local county or city hazmat collection locations. My local Mercedes/ BMW indy has taken that stuff off my hands in the past.

It's important to finish with the proper BMW ISTA procedure to get all of the air out. See video. I have my brake fluid replaced every two years for safety. It makes a difference. Hope this helps! |

Not to thread-jack, but I am curious - my infotainment suggests a brake fluid change in June 2023. Should I expect to be replacing rotors and pads at the same time?

There's no correlation between them. Just as you can't count on the car to tell you if you actually need a fluid change and must use a fluid tester you can't assume that either the iDrive guesstimate if the brake pad and/or rotors need replacing is accurate, nor can you rely on the pad wear sensors, as there are eight pads but only two sensors. The pads and rotors must be visually inspected at regular intervals.

The only reason to replace brakes and rotors is if the brakes and rotors are worn. Otherwise save your cash. Change brake fluid every two years, or if it gets 3% or higher moisture content as measured by an external sensing tool.
