Question Deploying soon. Early Lease termination possible?

Greetings everyone,

So I did do a forum search but nothing much came up but an older thread, regarding this topic.

Anyhow Active Duty U.S Air Force here and I recently volunteered and got picked up for a 365 deployment (one year deployment) to Afghanistan (rare for us Air Force folks). With that being said, is it possible to turn my BMW in early with military orders? The lease ends in June 2018 and I've had the car for almost a year.

I will most likely be stationed overseas again after this deployment and yes I'm going to try and get Germany, since I get advanced assignment consideration for doing a 365 deployment. I really hope I can give the car back, as that will be a hefty amount of money back in my pocket a month. If not, I'm guessing I'll have to fly back to the states and turn the car back into BMW after the lease ends

Best advice to answer your question is not going to be answered on this forum. Go to your dealer with your orders in hand, and see if they will honor an early termination.

One option is to see what you can get for the car if you sold it. Get a payoff quote through your myBMW account and see if you can sell it for that amount or close to it. If all else fails, you could still end up owing less than the balance of the lease.

The residuals are set artificially high so that could be a long shot unless you hardly drive the car.

Calling BMW FS might be more helpful than going to your dealer. You should try both though.

Termination of automotive leases

SCRA creates protections that allow service members to terminate automobile leases entered into before or during their time on active duty if they meet certain conditions:

National Guard and Reserve service members can terminate their automotive leases if they are called to active duty for a minimum of 90 days.
Active duty members can terminate their automotive leases if, after they entered into the lease, they either received military orders for a PCS move from the continental United States (CONUS) to outside the continental United States (OCONUS), a PCS move from an OCONUS state to any location outside of that state, or deployment for a minimum of 90 days.

To terminate an automotive lease, you will need to provide written notice and copy of your orders and return the vehicle no later than 15 days after you deliver the written notice. In regards to terminating an automotive lease, the lease ends the day you return the vehicle.

Thanks for that! That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll be giving BMW FS a call here soon.

Also, whom ever (at dealer) accepts your vehicle, be sure to document the following with signatures from you and dealer representative.

- Date and time they accepted responsibility for your vehicle (took keys)

- Condition (front to back including tires/wheels and interior, 1 to 10 scale)

- ODO, EXACT mileage as it sits when you handed them the keys

Also, if you're in a state in which you retain your License Plate(s)...take them off your vehicle and keep them or personally turn back into DMV

Stay safe

That's the plan and to save a lot of money! My last deployment was to Korea back in 2011.

Seems to be a couple of either retired or active duty Air Force folks on here. That's good to know

For sure! I'll be on TDY orders, so I'll be moving out my apartment here soon before my deployment training coming up and will be putting my stuff in storage to pocket that nice California BAH throughout this deployment!

Best of luck to you once you crossover to the the outside civilian life.

I just called BMW FS and I was only on the phone for 5 mins and got a positive (yes you can) answer about turning my lease in early.

There customer service was very familiar with military, deployments, and the SCRA. In fact, I was advised they have there own SCRA advisor department that's there to assist you with getting the car turned in early for deployments and what not.

Just wanted to pass this information along, so other military folks that may deploy can see this. Again thanks everyone for the help, I really appreciate it!

You'll keep your BAH, unless the government changes their mind in the middle of your deployment:

Awesome! AD Air Force here. Me and my wife are not leasing our BMWs but it's good to see BMW taking care of our folks who do. Turned in my wife's leased Chevy Cruze last year before we PCS'd to Germany and it worked out the same as this. Good luck to you and stay safe!
