Breaking in
Do you follow the BMW recommendations about breaking in the engine for the first 1200 miles? Many people say it really isn't needed. Thoughts?

I've been on Sport/Sport+ only since miles 6. Hence my 14.1 MPG.

Drive it like you stole it or follow BMW's recommend procedures for break-in?
Allow me to provide the standard responses for this thread: . This topic has been discussed a million times with everyone's opinion varying one side to the other so there is certainly no consensus on this subject. Just please don't ask "Can I use regular gas in my car instead of premium gas?" for your next question. |

you'd probably be fine without following break in procedures, just try not to redline a whole lot for the first couple hundred miles

A better question would be, is it better to follow BMW's break-in procedure with all-season tires or is it better to just drive normally, but with snow tires?

An even better question would be is it better to follow BMW's break-in procedure with all season tires with x-drive or is it better to drive normally with snow tires on a RWD?

I'm at 975 miles and my 340i has been babied under 4500RPMs. Its hit 5500RPMs like 3 or 4 times. I'll be on a 200-mile round-trip drive later this week and drive it hard once I'm back. Ugh, but the snow tires are on... No fun, really, till the Spring.

I follow the break in and avoid speeds greater than 100 mph as per the manual.

I think fanatical engineers with years of experience and advanced degrees spend years and millions of dollars designing your engine. Then the engines are manufactured with tolerances to the micrometer level by insanely expensive machines in an expensive and hi-tech process designed to wring every last bit of performance and reliability out of the design. Then the engines are stress-tested, heat-tested, endurance-tested, and generally beat-to-hell-tested. After which they're weighed to the microgram and measured to the micrometer to determine wear in order to make adjustments to either the design or the manufacturing process.
But I think you should totally ignore what those engineers say about break-in and instead listen to what random people on the internet tell you, because we forum-goers have much more experience and knowledge than those engineers. |

I followed the manual (yea one of those that still read lol) with the occasional overpull and sport mode trip going over the RPM's mentioned (ONLY when engine temp was up to speed) but never over the speed mentioned.
I actually went for some meaningless, but fun, nighttime drives to get it up to 2k km because I wanted it to be broken in by the time I had to put it on the autobahn 2 months after delivery! |

Kept it under 4500 till 500 miles, then below 6000 through the 1200miles but let it start feeling it more as it approached 1200. After the 1200 all the fun and testing began. I also waited until after break-in to add the MPPK, exhaust, and had them change the stock charge pipe.

I suppose my career in IT has made me more apt to "read the directions", but I feel you only break the car in once, might as well do it according to the manual.
I did this with my last car which I kept for 16 years and it is still "in the family". No issues at all, so I'll be doing the same with this car. |

All this sounds great from the engineering point of view. Now from a financial point of view, this doesn't make sense. Sure this might be more reliable but it costs more, so it won't go in the end product. Its a fact of life. In the 90's car makers figured out how to make reliable cars. Since then, they've been trying to figure out how to make a car as cheap as possible.
