COMMENTS

With this video promo BMW USA is announcing that you can now equip select BMW models in the online builder with some of the M Performance Parts catalog to get a visual preview of the parts installed on the car.

For now, only certain models have this feature available and only some M Performance Parts have been built into the builder currently.

I don't see it for the 3 series build your own... Instead they took out all the performance parts that were available under the "option" tab.

"For now, only certain models have this feature available and only some M Performance Parts have been built into the builder currently."

which means, only the models marketing wants to push right now.

I looked at some of the M Performance options. They're priced 30% above getbmwparts.com prices. You're better off buying the car as-is, getting the M parts from getbmwparts, then selling the stock parts - or keep them and sell the M performance parts when you're done with the car and put the stock parts back on for resell.

Either way, it's much cheaper to not buy M performance parts from the factory.

That's what I did...I got $350 back on brakes and should recoup $350 on the stock LSD. Comes out cheaper at port because they install for free...which is what I did with my MPE.

Really seems to vary by model and dealership...

Yup...+1 Not to mention getbmwparts.com has WAY better customer service (VERY easy to get a hold of to resolve issues)

But remember you are not paying for the full retail price when doing port installs. I got all invoice price, plus didn't have to pay for the install. Not saying it will be cheaper than the other way. But mine came out around the same.

Plus if leasing the cost is factored into residual and if financing, it's in payment.

Plus, biggie for me, it was way easier!

If my house looks like that, I give zero shits about your 30% discount.

BTW, very smart move (long overdue too). BMW is now also in the aftermarket parts business. It only makes sense to make it more convenient and charge a premium. Not everyone thinks like you guys do. Most guys (myself included) would pay a little bit more and have it factory installed, rather than wait for the car, shop and buy parts online, pay someone to install them and save spare parts in my garage for later resale.

I don't see them taking that much business from the great folks at getbmwparts.com, however.

No kidding! Though please, to all the pundits out there, remember this is primarily a marketing ploy aimed at getting a piece of the after market pie. Just because they slap an ///M badge on the car, representing the addition of an exhaust and a few aero bits, does not suddenly transform a base model to an M. Although if you slap enough of the badges on there, the argument could be made.

I do have an issue with M performance parts being offered for true M cars. If they are M cars they should have been equipped with the best parts available or at least with these parts being offered as options. Which now brings me to my second point: could BMW start offering some of these parts as factory installed options when you order your car? With BMW trying to position their cars more mainstream, I believe it would make sense for the enthusiasts to order these parts when the car is being built and avoid having to pay full price + installation. My $0.02

I think it is a PITA to install something, store the factory original part, swap it back and sell the performance part. Perhaps for some it is a hobby.

I'd be more impressed if they'd have the website together before they spent money making a short film to promote it.

I'd fire all the baby ///m's and get somebody that understands the real effects of correct or incorrect marketing.

But then 'the price would be too high'.

Based on what I've seen- i'd rather these as options/accessories than be included and needlessly increase the base price.
