Roll_the_dice's 2013 F30 EBII build thread
Hi everyone...have never done a build thread on any car I have owned. I always get caught up in the moment of the build and just forget to do a build. This time I have been taking pictures as I go and hopefully will be able to show the transformation from when I purchased the car to now and future upgrades.
As the car sits today--Many mods to come This thread will be a work in progress...will update and post pictures when I have time. I purchased the car 8/2016 CPO in Atlanta. As I get older, I don't care about speed or go fast parts anymore...it is all about aesthetics for me these days. Below is a list of mods and if I have a thread for the mod there will be a link to that thread. Current Mods Carbon Fiber interior trim with color matched accent trim in EBII (DIY) Plasti Dipped OEM wheels gray Plasti Dipped front grilles Ceramic window tint 30% -- GA legal limit Carbon Fiber mirrors (purchased from ebay, will be doing a new set soon DIY) M3 sliding center console in leather with DIY carbon fiber trim piece M3 513M wheels with 275 rear and 255 front -- MPSS M performance brakes custom powder coated Porsche yellow (DIY) M3 Steering Wheel install Paddle shift retrofit with M3 paddle extensions painted EBII (DIY) Seat/headrest stitching in blue thread Purchased but not installed 335i exhaust carbon fiber rear diffuser for 335i carbon fiber V style front lip carbon fiber side fins (rear) Future Mods Xpel on front bumper and hood Black satin vinyl roof wrap (maybe) Door card trim painted in EBII or carbon fiber not sure which yet Finish seat stitching in blue thread M3 Look black or CF front grilles When it was at the dealership and a few when I got home..

Anytime I get a "new" car I try to personalize it to me...Since I do my own carbon fiber work, one of the first things I do is the interior trim in real CF. This time I wanted to be different and actually color match the dash accent trim to the car... Here are the final results before I upgraded to the M3 steering wheel.
After painting the drivers vent trim accent piece Upgrade to the new M3 steering wheel and trim bits along with the paddle extensions

In these pictures you can see the plasti dipped OEM 400 wheels, grille, and CF mirrors.
Plasti-dipped wheels in gray with painted oem calipers Plasti-Dipped matte black grille Ceramic window tint 30% CF Mirrors from Ebay If I end up redoing the mirror covers, I will probably use a material that has some blue in it...such as this. I like how there is a hint of blue, but not overbearing.

The first time I saw the sliding arm rest on the M3 I loved it. Then I saw the alcantara one with the carbon fiber on the backside of the armrest. I am not an alcantara fan, but loved the carbon fiber. Being the DIY person that I am I figured the backside could be removed and I could put CF on it. I found one for sale on the M3/4 side of the board. He had upgraded to the alcantara armrest. I bought it and as soon as I received it, I studied it and figured out how to remove the piece I wanted...was not that hard..basically just slides off. So here were the results after I put CF on it and then installed it. Again a nice little accent piece that goes unnoticed the majority of the time, but it makes me happy and the Merino leather is nice on the armrest. I like it so much I made it my avatar.
After clearcoat and polishing (terrible picture) Installed Armrest slid back showing a small amount of CF

Powder coated brake calipers installation complete--Full thread here
I have wanted anM performance BBK for a while, but finally found a set used for a price that didn't cause a divorce. I originally wanted the Orange, but all the good prices were on what BMW calls Yellow...I called gold. I wanted something that made the car stand out and be different than the majority of BMW's on the road. I thought about doing orange, but since that is a BMW color, I chose Porsche Yellow. I did some research on which powder is closest to it, since Porsche like BMW paints their calipers. I bought the powder and learned on the fly since I had never powder coated before. I knew I needed to learn since I got a powder coating kit as a Christmas gift from my wife. One of my buddies media blasted the calipers for me. I ordered heat resistant decals for the calipers and started. The best thing about powder coating is if you don't like how it looks before you cure it in the oven (not kitchen oven you use for food), you can get compressed air and blow the powder off and start over...and I did on 3 of the 4 calipers! So anyway, I think they turned out great and here are the results and some progress pictures. Front Caliper after media blasting--Nice and clean surface First caliper curing in the oven First caliper cooling down after oven cure Decal installed before clear coat Cooling after the clear oven cure All 4 Calipers finished awaiting install Installing with the help (he did it all) of a friend Front calipers installed! Finished!

Thanks, I appreciate it.

The fronts poke a decent amount...they don't rub unless I am turning 100% and I hit a bump like backing out of my driveway...so I adjusted how I back out. I am going to need tires soon. I will probably keep the 275's in the rear and change the fronts to 245's. I know there is someone running a square 9" setup of the 513's and he is running 245s all around. It looks good and doesn't rub or poke. I knew I probably wouldn't keep the 255s forever, but I was too cheap to buy new tires since these had a lot of tread left when I bought the setup. I will try to get a pic of the front poke for the thread before I change tires.

Thanks buddy! I appreciate the kind words. The truck is a 1965 Chevy C10 long wheel base stepside. That is my summer project/restoration. Have a new engine/trans coming in the next week or 2 along with other goodies...going to get it mechanically sound this summer and repair any rust spots and use it as it was intended a truck! I LOVE this truck!

I always loved looking at contrast stitching on seats and thought this should have been an option on our cars, so I googled seat stitching and found this thread on an NSX forum and copied what he did. This is just a subtle difference that makes the interior stand out a little...not that mine needs help standing out with all the color matched paint I have in it...but it ties it together nicely. I started the stitching of the headrests a while ago. I have done all the headrests and rear seat. I took the rear bench out and did it while watching TV. I started the passenger side seat, but determined it will be easier to remove the seat and do it inside the house than bending down in the garage and doing it. I was planning on doing another thread on it, but never got around to it since I wasn't finished. The front seats have a LOT of stitching...so I guess I saved the worst for last. I wanted to get my feet wet before tackling the seats though. It is very time consuming, but not hard at all. Again I enjoy doing things myself and to have something custom makes me happy. Anyway here are a few pics of the progress so far. Rear Headrests Drivers Headrest Rear Seat stitching...same on both sides of seat Passenger front seat--so far

Looking great! Did you just go through with blue thread and trace the old or did you die the threads?

I went through and followed/traced the black OEM thread...so the black is there and the blue is "woven" in and out of the black thread without ever going though the leather. I didn't want to dye the threads since I wanted to be able to reverse it if I wanted or didn't like it when I was finished. Key is having the correct needles and thread. I bought the thread on ebay and the needles at Joanne Fabrics I believe.

Looks awesome, a really classy finish to the seats. Interesting method and sounds less complicated than any other method!
Thanks for sharing.

Something, something, imitation and flattery...
I think you can tell I really like your interior! Not nearly as cleanly done as yours, of course (and this is actually the second attempt). |
