BMW OEM Paint
Do BMW certified collision shops use the OEM paint manufacturer? My car is at a certified shop and is receiving extensive front end work after rocks from a milled road were thrown into my car from passing traffic and a dump truck.

I learned that but my question is, would a repair shop use that manufacturer?

They may or may not, you'll have to call around and find a shop that will.
PPG paint is common however. Sometimes a shop will order paint for you from various manufacturers but of course that leads to higher costs for things.

Yeah, honestly, it just needs to match. It's at a very reputable shop but who knows what paint will actually be used.

The BMW branded paint is Sikkens which gets re-labeled as BMW Color System. BMW Certified shops were required to carry Color System paints when I was a certified shop (1999-2011 before leaving BMW). I am not sure how much the program has changed since then.
Major paint brands will all carry a lifetime guarantee BUT just like anything there is the opportunity for human error. There are no car manufacturers that sell pre-mixed paint codes. What happens is just like Home Depot, you get 50 different tints to mix your own colors. There are millions of combinations to mix up for all the different vehicle makes. The major brands would be Glasurit (BASF), Spies Hecker (Axalta), Sikkens (Akzo Nobel) and PPG https://content.bmwusa.com/microsite...lor-System.pdf |

Here you go, as of 2006 they are "supposed" to be using BMW Color System. I will tell you this though, 99% of BMW shops had more than 1 paint line so there is no guarantee that Color System gets applied unless youre there the day they paint it and watch it mixed and applied

If it's solvent based paint it's not OEM. BMW uses water based paint. https://content.bmwusa.com/microsite...lor-System.pdf

A good paint shop even considers aging when mixing the color, it's not so much a question of OEM or not.

I believe the BMW system can take that into account. They sell tint and carrier separately, to be mixed on site, which would allow for a fine adjustment of the color. Someone who works with it would be able to confirm if that's the case.

I wanted to get the plastic on the front of my GM Pewter truck sanded to remove the black textured and sprayed to match the body color. I went to the body shop all armed with my "year/color" and the guy just laughed at me.
He pulled out his color book and there was probably 100 paint shades for "my color". Different batch lots, age, vendors, etc. impact the color. Any good shop will blend the paint to match your color. It's the reason the OEM touch up paint ALWAYS looks like crap on your car, unless you are that 1 in a million case that your paint perfectly aligns with that little vial of paint. |

I mean, the point is that the same paint on plastic is looking different to being put on metal, anyway. You can see the difference even on a brand new car. So I really would not worry too much... I proper paintshop will do their best to get it as close as poosible

I just got this done on my hood and front bumper. Looks amazing and they did a great job blending it. All color blending was done onsite. I'm sure a professional can probably tell it was painted but I sure as heck cannot. They also removed small dings etc and car just looks smoooooooth.
