Unless you go beyond standard FBO/tune/ethanol with your engine, you're not going to get close to 500hp. If you do, you're going to venture into significant cost and decreased reliability. As suggested, switching to a vehicle with a B58 will allow much more room for gains. Otherwise, I'd also consider a transmission tune (xHP).

There’s a lot of info out there, but this forum is a small echo chamber of negativity when it comes to the 4 cylinder n20/n26/b46/b48 cars.

Sadly, all the good information and high powered n20/n26/b46/b48 people and info has moved to Facebook under “the n20, m26 & b48, b46 car club” group on Facebook.

Yes the stock 330i/430i low compression motor handles 37 psi no issues. For safety and heat due to factory pistons, 32psi should be the limit.

Attached is a dyno for the IM450 on crappy euro 95 ron.

https://iposmotorsport.com

Typical mods are:
downpipe
Full exhaust
B58tu pump or LT1 pump upgrade
Turbo inlet
Intake
Chargepipe (stock holds 37lbs no issues)
xHP trans tune

Custom tune of course
I’m about to tap in with you great information To know! This literally answered all my questions regarding the dyno and how much it can produce .

More or less everything the b58 can do the b48 can do. Limiting factor is fueling aka fuel injectors like the b58. All HPFP upgrades from the b58 fit and cross over onto the b46/b48 with a check box within MG Flasher. Bm3 works as well, but a request has to be made.

Stock turbo is limited to around 320 whp on a full e85 tune if you swap over a b58tu pump. Plug and play for the b58tu pump.

IPos turbos appear to be the way to go as they are recasted factory manifolds with bigger ar housings to allow for more boost, but also twin scroll to keep stock like turbo response. This allows you to use all your mods that fit the stock turbo, a coupler adapter is made for the larger turbo inlet.

Pure turbo for this car makes the same power as the n20 as the b46/b48 gen 1 use a similar sized td04 turbo. Thus 330whp or 360whp on ethanol is the max there. For 2500 without a core im450 is a bargain to make more power + have head room + don’t need to pay a core fee.

As long as I can max it to 350whp that’s good to know now I can produce that much how do I make the request for bm3 ? To crossover upgrades for all hpfp upgrades ?

You can’t make 350whp from the stock turbo. Need to upgrade the turbo as the stock turbo cannot flow enough air for 350whp.

You’ll have to get a custom tune, I recommend navardi tuned. “Internet search navardi tuned” and their website will pop up as this forum doesn’t like outside links.

Bimmerpost wants 185 a MONTH to advertise so yeah, no.

This is a huge info dump for anyone searching

Anyone try the turbo from a b48e? (Or whatever the turbo is for the m235i/m35i engines)

Anyways, b58 or s58 is where it’s at. Lol

If you want to use some "cowboy math" on this:

B58 - 6 cylinders - 500 WHP
B48 - 4 cylinders - 500/6 * 4 = 333 WHP

Both of those engines come from the same roots, one is missing 2 cylinders from the factory. Can you get 350WHP reliable on a B48, no clue... My gut says no.

B48e is around 360 on 93 and 380 on e85. It’s around 400 wheel torque on both fuels.

It’s better to go with the iPos unit now that it’s available for f chassis cars. The mini coopers with the b48 the b48e bolts right up with minimal mods (weld mounting “bracket”) and it’s plug and play

This is the size difference of the stock gen 1 b48 turbo vs the IPOS IM500. I was asked to not release dyno sheets of that, but it was 480whp + on e50 mix with methanol injection. Full bolt ons + custom tune of course
