I’m super conflicted. I’m going for a more aggressive black and red build on my Melbourne red 340i and I love the m style mirrors, but I’m conflicted on whether or not I’d be a poser lol. Autotechnic has some “inspired” slightly different styles, but I can’t find anything in carbon that’s really significantly different and I’m just not in love with the m performance style.

Any advice?

IMO it will always come down to individual taste. When I go to car shows or gatherings, I will generally see something that inspires me, but I also see things that I think "what the hell is wrong with you" so to each his own.

I went for the Akrapovic M2 carbon fiber mirror covers. I like the different design, not trying to be M3/4 mirror imitators… top quality like MPerformance as well. Available in gloss or matte finish.

Do you have other carbon bits on your car? That weave seems pretty unique, so I wonder if I could match it on the spoiler and front lip

I did the matte mirrors with MP everywhere else..
I ended up later adding blackout to the mirror indicator lights.

M performance lip and spoiler? That looks mean! Have a close up of the mirrors? I’m kind of obsessed Lolol. The mp parts aren’t carbon right?

Yup. The MP splitter and spoiler for F36 were only made in gloss CF…

The CF weave is similar between the two. The mirror covers are full CF, not a skin over plastic. They mount with screws just like the MP CF mirror covers.

Lol so, I was inspired, until someone came up with the v3 autotecknic mirrors for $275, couldn’t pass that up vs paying $700 for the akrapovics 😓

Nope.... not lame at all. These are on my never ending upgrade list. The Akra's are cool, but I can't justify the cost!

not a big fan of M style mirror caps, especially since M3 mirrors are plug and play. if you want winged mirror, I would just get the full OEM M3 mirror assembly second hand and install them and do it properly. But the cost is too high for most people to do that so they just go with the mirror cap only version which I don't think look good at all.

in my neck of the woods every single toyota camry and infiniti has amazon winged mirror caps, the coolness factor of them completely wore out for me personally.

love the Akras, considered them for a long while but really didn't like that they put their logo on the caps. but props on owning a fairly rare part that you almost never see on F3Xs

Not lame at all. Honestly I'm baffled about the appeal of the m style "winged" mirror caps, it looks like a "poser" complete with fake badges in the back.

I just got a 2016 F36 sportline, and searched high and low for a set of NON-winged style carbon fiber mirror caps to match my carbon fiber rear spoiler. Finally found a set, and I gotta say they look great! Nevertheless my local carbon fiber guy had to order a set in for me, took about 2 weeks. Installing them tomorrow, along with replacement OEM European convex mirror glass.

If you're set on ordering them yourself, here's a few options:

I found a guy selling some autotecknic v3s for a great deal, so snagged them, I’m personally very content.

Honestly you're best buying these direct from the supplier. I believe Auto ID were the original listers for these but they're sold everywhere these days.

I bought £400 solid carbon ones from them back in the day and the epoxy dry rotted after 2 years. I found the manufacturers on Aliexpress and bought new covers through them for 1/4 of the price.

These days they sell a V2 of this design with the turn signal built in which I now have instead:



Considering the "dry carbon" caps rot out very fast I opted for the skinned covers, as it's hand laminated you'll get a slightly thicker layer of resin providing more protection.

IIRC I worked a deal out with the seller to pay via a Paypal invoice, he brought the final price down to around £150 and listed the invoice as £110 to bring me under the import tax window

Quick question... does your 2017 LCI car have both heated and autodim mirror glass on passenger side (right side) or just heated?

Sorry for the late reply, I just noticed your question.

My 2017 4 series passenger side mirror has the autodip and heated mirror functions, but does not autodim like the driver's side mirror. My previous 2014 3 series passenger side mirror did have the autodim function in addition to auto dip and heat.

Honestly, having had both, I will admit that the autodim on the passenger side mirror was perhaps the hardest feature to adjust to, when I first drove the car at night on a dark freeway, it was rather annoying not being able to see the familiar bright lights, hence why I changed to the European convex mirrors for both for a wider field of view.

With my 2017 4 series, I honestly can say that I really don't miss the autodim feature on the passenger side mirror, the driver's side mirror and the rear view mirror autodims, and I find that sufficient enough. Nevertheless the convex mirror I got does have the connector for auto dimming, however I would need to add to the passenger side mirror wiring to get this feature to work. Maybe a future retrofit project?

Since the time I've asked this question, I've found out that BMW stopped supplying auto dimming passenger side mirrors (LHD or RHD, no matter) on all LCI F3x cars. But often enough, I do get annoyed by extra bright lights shining at me from passenger side mirror, to be honest. There are too many people driving with high beams on or with misaligned headlights or with misaligned HID/LED upgraded reflector headlights in Toronto area.
Highly likely, I will be updating my car to add this option back and use Euro aspherical mirror glass in both. I have the 2015 F30 with this option, so I will just copy the wiring from it.

When there is a ford truck form 2000+ (or modern dodge GM etc) behind me I’m super thankful 2015 are preLCI.
