340i Xdrive f/r diff fluid the same?

Can someone just tell me if they use the same and the amount needed? Doesn't seem to be a consensus but according to ECS (3)quarts of redline GL-5 75w85 gear oil and 3 drain plugs are all that is required.

they do not use same fluid, ECS recommends same aftermarket fluid for both but OEM fluids are different for front and rear diff, to me that implies they use different additives that aftermarket fluid does not contain.

RealOEM says BMW G1 hypoid for rear, BMW G2 hypoid for front, and DTF1 for transfer case.

ECS however suggests Redline 75w85 GL-5 for front/rear and Redline MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 for transfer case.

Whichever fluids you go for it’s 0.8L rear diff, 0.6l front diff, 0.7L transfer case ( according to FCPEuro).

Right on, FCP just confirmed you can use redline 75w85 for the front and rear differentials on 340i xdrives.

Just because an aftermarket fluid is a compatible weight, doesn’t mean that it should be used. As someone else mentioned, BMW uses special additives in the fluids of these really expensive drivetrain components for a reason. I’m not going to risk many thousands of dollars for replacement and a lot of hassle, over a few dollars for a bottle of fluid. My front diff, rear diff and transfer case all take one bottle of fluid every 3-4 years. That’s pennies per month more to buy the Genuine fluid at a discount from GetBMWParts, etc.

A few years ago I was picking up a bottle of fluid for my rear diff/LSD. The old experienced parts manager got it for me and double checked the part number. He cautioned me to make sure to always use the fluid part number that he was giving me. He said that it had specific additives. And when cars came in needing a new diff he noticed that it was always someone who used a non-Genuine fluid. He wasn’t saying the fluid was the cause, but it seemed to be a contributing factor. Why risk it?

I just bough 2 quarts for 75w85 but when we to inspect (it’s my sons car) we saw that shock bottomed out through the knuckle on the passenger side. Made contact with the boot which split something to allow the cv grease to be flung everywhere.

Cleaned it all up and got the strut back where it needed to be but couldn’t find any split/tear or hole in the CV boot. No noise from the bearing or any clicking so not sure how it all escaped.

So this went from replacing the axle seal to replacing the cv boot and knuckle. Bought a BMW CV boot repair kit, new knuckle and a bunch of other shit to fix all this.

Puzzling that you didn’t find a torn CV boot. Wonder if it’s not CV grease? Just for giggles put your hands all over the strut and the big cylindrical upper control/thrust arm bushing to see if they are wet. They could also produce fluid. Maybe the strut blowing down through the knuckle was so violent that the force just fluid or grease out but didn’t cause a continuing leak.

It’s definitely CV grease. Strut is bone dry top to bottom.

Here’s a pic before and after we cleaned it up. There was a fair amount of grease all over the inside of the knuckle, arms andinside of that wheel.

You can see the strut touching the boot with that side off the ground. In theory full compression would push everything down on the boot and force the grease out either end?

I imagine that could happen at the larger outside end. I’m used to finding a split somewhere on the boot. Examine it carefully after you have it off.
